Locked grooves cutting?

Post by sifres » Fri Nov 19, 2010 8:22 am

I'm playing with the idea to release a 12" with a track on it that should end in a locked groove. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the cutting process of this. My guess is it is limited to one turn on the turntable and so the BPM would actually set the place where the loop goes on the 12" right?

So what I'm looking for is information. Is there a limit to wich bpm's could fit and the number of bars it would contain? Can just any vinyl cutter do this or do you go to certain industry specialists? And since it would be a limited project (about 300 to 400) does this make the cost skyrocket?

(Not a dubstep ep though, but this forum contains so much audio freaks I thought it would be a good place to ask)

Maybe best to speak to some mastering /cutting engineers about how this could be done on a dub

Yeah, not really in that fase yet. (If it gets released it would be well into next year).

So just wondering if anybody has some form of experience or tips in this direction. -q-

Thanks! I do, however, seem not to be attracted by a mastering service that has LOUD in the title :a: :D

could you keep us up to date with the progress on this? not seen any creative work with records in a long time.

I assumed getting anything other than standard would cost a bomb now days if you are lucky enough to find someone with experience with doing it.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

LXC @ alphacut has just released a 112 track 'EP' (i guess) with 111 locked grooves on one side.

One revolution @33 rpm = 133.333... bpm. Or a loop lasting exactly 1.8 seconds.

@45rpm its 180bpm, or 1.333s

Check this thread for more info or contact for <XC, he works at a cutting plant in germany.

it's John Dent. He's been cutting plates longer than you've been alive! Very helpful chap as well.

Have you seen/heard the new Rockwell 12? "Reverse Engineering", one of the tracks is called - it's mostly made up of reversed samples and the whole side is cut from the inner groove to the outside, ie backwards. I'm no DnB head but the tracks are pretty sick IMHO.
I assumed getting anything other than standard would cost a bomb now days if you are lucky enough to find someone with experience with doing it.
It shouldn't do. I guess the cutting house would just charge the normal hourly rate for it, and cutting a locked groove doesn't take very long to actually do (though of course you might have to allow time and material costs - which are significant - to re-cut a side, if they fuck it up).

pretty sure Ramadanman and Peverelist have both done this, can't think which 12"s off the top of my head though. :roll:

@static_cast » : yeh I quite a few records like that.

I bet none of you have seen a record like this tho. I have a record that I have played for a long time now. Recently I went to play it and I heard a different track completely for the first time. I was totally baffled and was double checking the record to make sure it was what I thought it was. I put the needle on it again and the track was back to what I remembered it as. I was stoned and feeling very confused. I was sure I was just playing another record. After looking closer and checking the net, I see there are TWO track pressed on one side! two grooves running alone side each other! its called concentric grooves I think.

Haha, yeah, concentric grooves are pretty cool. I think at one point a long time ago there were attempts to cut multichannel audio to vinyl this way. I'd quite like to put out a record with two concentric tracks on one side, which both sound identical in the first half but completely different in the second. When you're DJing you never know which you'll get. Maybe one track will have the most ridiculous drop you could imagine, the other will degenerate into an accordion-led sea chanty with overdubbed fart noises. It'd be like Russian roulette except with pirates instead of death.

Pro artists should do this for the lulz and not tell anyone :D

actually 2 of the 4 sides from the Lockout EP by Milanese are cut like this - on each of the double grooved sides, one version of the track is in an odd time signature, the other version is 4/4.

Pretty sure it was cut @ D&M as they're about the only people that can do it now Alchemy are closed.
