I should also point out that many of these competitions request that you do not put any losing logo designs in your portfolio. Often there's copyright issues and some compo T&Cs specify they get ownership once you submit.

isn't that the point of competitions?

when i enter the gadget show competition and don't win i don't expect any benefit for entering BUT if i entered a remix comp or if i was a designer a logo comp i might learn something during the project. the piece of work even though it didn't win can still be kept for a portfolio unlike my lost £1.50 that goes to the gadget show when i inevitably don't win.
The gadget show doesn't ask you to put time and effort in to your entry and it's not your job to professionally enter competitions. This logo competition is asking for a good amount of effort, an if no effort is put in, it's a loss for everyone involved.
no but a remix comp does ask you to put the same kind of effort and like i said even if you don't win you can definitely gain something from the project the same way you gain something everytime you embark on a project.

as for the terms and conditions saying you can't use your entry in your portfolio are you really that scared they are gonna fuck you for it if you did?

it's a competition the point is the winner gets something not everyone else does.

You can't compare a designer and a music producer... 2 totally different things imo.

For example, if you make a remix contest for rusko; on any releases, links, a website etc... Your name is here.
As a graphic designer, you don't get sh*t. They are not going to put your name everytime they use your material... see what I mean ?

Also, I think every design should be charged proportionality to the income it's going to generate... If your local kebab shop is asking for a logo, you won't charge the same as if it was Louis f*in Vuitton...

1000$ for a rusko logo... that's pretty weak to be honest.

I think $1000 is a reasonable prize. I'm assuming that it's US dollar which makes it almost one thousand quizillion New Zealand dollars. I could retire off that.

Remember this is a comp for the fans not over paid art directors.

I think the point is that it massively devalues creative work. I wouldn't blame Rusko at all, it's probably more the PR campaign. However it isn't good that he has chosen to associate with this idea.

I think David Airey (a very well respected UK designer) puts the whole thing into perspective beautifully:

the winner gets 1000 dollars! Isn't that the same as paying a designer? If you went to a design company and offered 1000 dollars for a logo and they made one that you didn't like, then you wouldn't pay them a penny. Isn't this exactly the same, but just in a different format?

yeh it's kind of the same but then different in the fact you might as just well play the lottery and try to win £1000

also that isn't quite how it works, if a company doesn't like the end project, they should still pay you for the time you spent developing their logo. Half the time if the design is bad it's probably the result of bad brief from the client.

Plus once they've paid for your time to create the logo i.e. $1000, they then need to pay you for usage rights... which in this case is not only worldwide, but is also going to be used as a brand to sell merchandise... so you need to start thinking about adding lots of some more '0000's' on to that figure...
