i entered a dubstep competition in san francisco...

Post by Kaifeng » Sun Nov 21, 2010 1:49 pm

It was my first time making dubstep. We were required to make 3 dubstep remixes of songs assigned to us, and make 1 additional remix of a song of our choice. I ended up winning the competition (FTW). Here are clips of my remixes that i played out to the crowd. i had a blast

Thanks a lot AK. I had super fun at the event. I heard lots of other sick dubstep remixes so it was really cool. Did I meet you last night?

The quality of your tunes aside (I barely skimmed through it and concluded that it was 'not my style'), the whole concept surrounding this is so wrong. I hope you get that.

Well, first of all I don't get the competition side of things? Secondly, why issue a competition based around remixes (which are illegal in the first place?). That is, to me atleast, no real indicator of talent and does not stimulate creativity in any way.

When people have to measure the production side of their music in a competition that is based around remixing mainstream music, I just don't get it anymore.

It's a way for people to be competitive through music what's wrong with that? It still requires some form of talent/creativity, maybe not as much, but it's still there. And if someone enjoys mixing don't try and pass your silly judgment on them.

-q- I don't know if you got it in the first place... I would ask you to elaborate more but that's what got us this post.

e: Just so it's clear, I'm being a dick because you actually said that remixes are a) illegal, b) no real indicator of talent, and c) does not stimulate creativity in any way. Did remixes rape your mum or something?

If you think this is normal practice, you obviously didn't get dubstep or ethics of (making) music in general. You can disagree and you'll be wrong.
:m:
Yeah, I know I'm dramatising : it's not as if some small time competition on the peripheries of the scene (and I'm not just talking geography here) will be the final nail on the coffin. It's just that practices such as these have become so common it's disgusting. People are getting so lazy and quality is just getting lost.

I mean , a remixing competition? Degrading dubstep isn't of any of your concerns I suppose. Have you listened to those tunes (which won apparently?). Not to attack the guy on a personal level, but maybe he should just go do his own thing? It would probably have sounded 10 times better. And why must Americans turn everything into a competition? Those are wrong ethics to begin with.

It's just a very lame concept. People have no values any more.

I didn't say anything about it being normal practice, I think you are having a debate that no one started. At least you realize you're being dramatic. Now you say it's a purely American thing? Keep going, I'm curious to see what other societal/musical trends you can blame on this remix competition. So far we have bad ethics, lazy Americanism..

e: you even almost hit "lack of family values"!!

Well I know you're just trying to undermine my post but I'm going to indulge you anyway :

1) Were do I say Americans are lazy? If anything I said the opposite. It is however apparent that people on the other side of the pond have a bigger tendency towards competitiveness. Might be good a thing in high school, doubt it's appropriate in this particular context though. Also, the degrading of dubstep has nothing to do with being American or not and I never said so even in this topic. Maybe it's because you only have a limited amount of posts (not playing the newbie card), it's just that people a bit more active on this board will know that I have stated multiple times that there is no geographical divide in the latest tendencies within 'dubstep'. You're falsely accusing me of implying that.

2) Family values? :W: I'll play along and say : in a way this thing that we've been doing for half a decade has become a frame similar to that as a family I suppose. Seeing it being degraded time and time again has not been the most pleasant of things. Hence my tendency towards dramatising.

3) I still see no effort from you towards objectively justifying practices such as these? Remixes without permission are illegal and dubstep as a genre doesn't need crap like this : especially in a time were quantity is overtaking quality. In my opinion, those are bad ethics and again that has nothing to do with being American and I never stated it was.

You yourself have been guilty of making an argument no one ever started, in my humble opinion.

Oh, man. Not to get into the rest of your preaching, but you can't say shit like "not to play your newbie card" then play it, esp. when the rest of your sentence didn't really relate to it -- people can have musical knowledge outside of this forum, you know.

Think it's about close thread time, what a waste..

Again, you are implying things I never say.
Were does it say your musical knowledge relates to the amount of posts on DSF? I'm saying that there have been multiple threads about the subject in which I actively participated, but you might have missed. Granted, the newby card thing I should have kept to myself :D: .

I think this is an argument you can't win. Is this why you just refer to whatever someone with a differing opinion is saying as 'preaching', ask for the topic to be closed and walk away?
I just listened to 3 great tracks* during the time I spend in this topic and got a point across.

*They were not shitty remixes of course :Q:

If no one has values anymore, and everyone has lost the quality/effort, then you should view that as a blessing for people who do have the "effort/quality". Because if you actually do have "effort/quality" you should stick out like a black man at a KKK meeting, but more or less in a good way. Less competition for "creative" people, based off of your opinions of course.

Haha, no, but you bring up a relevant point - why waste time critcizing others' ethics and threadshitting when you could be listening to music? Why would I participate in an argument with someone so entrenched in their beliefs that they come out and say that "you can't win this argument"? The reason you see no objective defense of these practices from me is because I feel no objective need to attack them. Ça va, ça va. I'm sorry that I couldn't commit to your argument - I am actually going to walk away now though, I've got shit to do today!
