Re: So it's all kicking off in Korea
It always feels a bit hypocritical when people are attacked, condemn the attacker's actions, then threaten to retaliate.

All of that.lloydnoise wrote:from what I have heard, SK had live fire exercises for much of this week, the NK gov claim they had 'warned' them not to proceed with them but this hasn't been confirmed. This is the 'first shot' NK claim was fired by SK but in reality it was not an attack. NK then go batshit on SK cos they are so insanely paranoid and hyped for lengage (imo)
can't help that they've been bragging about the progress of their nuke program all week AND the fact that Kim Jong Un is gonna be taking over the helm soon. The massive retaliation quote has already been taken out of context by most major media outlets. Lee said this would be an option if there are further attacks. He also mentioned that whilst they need to deal with the issue sternly, the last thing they want is an unneccesary escalation.
I think the most interesting thing now is to see what China's reaction to this is. Won't be WW3 tho, pretty dumb to leap from this minor skirmish to China vs USA imo
I can't see China intervening unless this really escalates, tbh... it's just not their style and, given that the South Korean government would have a very hard time selling a virtual civil war to their people (who are more interested in making money than squabbling with the neighbours these days). The Korean War was fucking horrible and I think they remember it pretty clearly.
Unless North Korea go absolutely batshit crazy, South Korea will keep this fairly low key... from what a friend in Seoul has been saying, they're a bit like the smackhead brother. Occasionally they come around and smash the place up, but you still send them the odd cheque and you don't turn them into the cops, whilst hoping that one day they'll grow the fuck up.

if it was in a vacuum I'd agree, but there is a history with North Korea and South KoreaMotorway to Roswell wrote:It always feels a bit hypocritical when people are attacked, condemn the attacker's actions, then threaten to retaliate.
I think it's a bit hypocritical to bomb someone and not expect to be bombed in return

because it's not the start of world war 3. North Koreas military has numbers but is rather pathetic in the grand scheme of things. About as hefty as Iraq's was as far as firepower which was obliterated in a matter of hours. Their nuke program is not fully functional. China is not going to defend North Korea as long as no one gets close to their border and as long as the united states doesn't occupy north korea and there is very little debate who is to blame in the scenario.
There's no polarization in the conflict. The only debate is how active China wants to get this time in spanking North Korea's bottom.

Yeonpyeong Island is a very isolated, almost exclusively military island(s) that isn't readily accessable to the masses. It's like 5 Square miles. It's not like your local news man can drive out there, throw on the flack jacket, chat shit, and throw it back to Chip and Dianne in the studio.
It's not like Seoul got bombed, and it's not like this shit doesn't happen every half dozen years.

Re: So it's all kicking off in Korea
I think time available would be better spent on letting the north and south negotiate unification, doing so in the next 50 years is actually very plausible apparently.
It is not anyone elses business except for wishing peace and goodwill (though many other people will say otherwise and I could be wrong). This current situation developed out of a civil war that turned in to a proxy-power game like Vietnam, the only difference is that the USA didn't pull out of this one and it's still going on (but South Korea likes them there so meh I just hope they just don't throw their weight around unnecessarily).

for the most part the south asked the US to stay to help enforce the DMZ as they were fairly incapable of enforcing it themselves
not to mention the south wants absolutely fuck all to do with the north's political system and wants no unification even in the slightest if it means absorbing any bit of their government. You're talking about a forward thinking, progressive nation, and a communist regime of the worst kind. The odds of them unifying are about the same as borgore and mala unifying to make a country album.
The only way unification happens is via a rebellion in the north or some kind of major collapse as North Korea is fairly against democracy
