buy a piano!! they can run pretty cheap 2nd hand, usually ya just need to get them tuned professionally like.

if you checkout free ad magazines/gumtree/freecycle you can usually find them free, only issue is actually getting them to your house and obviously having the room to keep it.
bingo
that and fitting them through the door
most of the time a piano is a permanent addition to where it is placed
yup i had to pass up a free piano because i couldn't get it into where i lived, bit gutting but would of been practically impossible. i would love a piano but i'm not removing a window to get it in.

so your doors, windows, and hallways can accommodate a piano being moved in easily?

yeah hard! my front door leads straight into the hallway! No need to use no windows like.
Prob would have only had 1 house where I would have had too take it thru the backdoor ah.

OT.. this thread made me want to play around with some keys... some soulful D&B in the making!!
been awhile since I last made some D&B... sounding real sweet too!

Cheers for all the feedback guys, unfortunately this is now all completely irrelevant because my musical virtuoso friend has given me an old yamaha jobby on semi-permanent lend, which is fucking sweet.
Might be looking in the future though so I will refer back to (some of) your advice.

Oh, and I kept seeing pianos on freecycle but my studio is on the top floor of my house so that would be pretty difficult really...

what would happen if you had it be an outdoor piano? how long do you think it would last? Probably go out of tune pretty fast and the wood would rot. You could put a tarp under it and find something to put over it to resist weather and extreme temperature... Why am I even thinking about this... But if it was free and you had a yard/stronger friends/a truck why not?

...because I wanna learn to play the piano... and you need enough keys to play two handed, and they need to be properly weighted so you can get the feeling of a real piano

nobody needs a full 88 unless they are really crazy..
the mpk has knobs sliders nice keys and a great feel
88 keys and weighted are for those of us who like to play naturally
there's a world outside of 3 note basslines and a couple octave melodies

Someone works for akai ;)
Pianos sound good from the bottom to the top.
I use a two octave axiom for simple dub stuf but not everyone only produces electronic music...
Hence...
