Download the free refill called EXODE it should be on google or the propellerheads site it has tons of refills for all the stacks and to be able to manipulate the already preset effects and sounds is a good way to find new avenues.

I like using subtractor for basslines and throw a scream distortion onto the rack if the spirit moves you...hell, since subtractor only offers 2 oscillators, stack a few synths and c&p the tracks if you have to...Thor is more versatile, but subtractor has a smaller learning curve, and the spirit of dubstep, in this amateurs opinion, is in a nice beat and a good stripped down bassline...people get so caught up in the technicality of it all...just make a song...you'll appreciate it, and that's most important...

There's a really good book out there called "Reason's Virtual Instruments". It can explain to you how to get the most from the synths. This isn't some bull**** RTFM post either. I teach music production for a college, and that's the textbook I insist on using for the class.

Develop a couple combinator patches layering 3 to 6 subtractors, program the macros to a few common parameters, and use the Mods on the malstrom to modulate. It's not massive, and it's not the ES2. Don't expect it to sound like that.

To make a nice bass in reason all you have to do is record a sound when you say something like yooh or woooh then put it in NN-19, play with all the differente parameters and shit, then put an eq and some distortion on to it. Why hello thar Borgore.

I sound like a right troll here, but if you type 'Rusko in Reason' into youtube there's a cool tutorial on how to get a really nice Rusko-ish sound in reason; that's pretty filthy.

I think your find that cokie monstar uses Subtractor for his midrange sounds. Just mess with diffrent waveforms and the FM knob.
Then because the LFO is crap on the subtractor send the output of the subtractor to a ECF-42 filter. Then take one of the CV outputs from a Thor and send it the the filter CV input of the ECF-42 filter. Then on the Thors modulation matrix send LFO 1 to CV output ??(what ever one you used). Now you have Thors grate LFO with KEY SYNK controling the filter on your Subtractor sound.
Easy as pie

This is almost exactly how I do my LFO filtering. Although I usually use Malstrom or Thor for the 'Datsik' sounds. But very handy indeed, Subtractor can get monster deeeep.

nice tune in the sig! this is a random question and it doesn't necessarily pertain to reason, but i've been wondering this for awhile and i haven't figured it out in reason yet... how do you get a bassline that sounds almost mono to suddenly become wide in the stereo field? are you splitting the signal in half and panning them, using a stereo imager, or resampling? or is it something else?

Well personally, I make all my synths and bass in mono, then once i'm happy with them I duplicate the combinator, then pan 1st to the left, 2nd to the right, and throw the note of the 2nd off to the right a little. Basically it's playing the left synth first then the right synth is playing a split second or so later. Giving it the 'widener' effect lol.
