i feel the same way...not to take anything away from either of these guys...they`re good...just why does everyone want to sound like them??? there isn`t really anything that complex going on with the drums especially...its a combination of sound fx and modulation on simple waveforms...its the same shit as the day when everyone wanted to sound like noisia and started using kontakt because they thought that the only way to get those sounds was to use the LFO and filters in kontakt. honestly people should be worried about how to become better musicians overall, because chord progressions and melodies that wrap around twisted basslines are the real bangers IMHO....thats just the thing...a lot of people that DJ and start producing have no musical background gets boring after a time hearing the same regurgitated concepts in everyone`s tracks.jaydot wrote:IMHO they're not "that" good. Not enough to warrant the relentless bumming of them. I prefer my brostep to have a more complex drum pattern and more depth to the bass. And a little additional melody too. , Datsik tracks I've listened to are always kick, snare...kick...kick...snare.... always 1/3 and the basses aren't that aren't to reploicate... one oscillator in use, maybe two at most. I prefer more harmonics, more depth, if you get me. Datsik/Excsion basses are a little on the thin side
Take nothing away from them, they're still dope producers, but I mean.... like. Why does everyone want to make tunes like them so much?
I can reel off loads of brostep and beyond producers that are better producers who don't get the same recognition.
It's getting a bit grating now IMO.

I said this in the UK vs US forum awhile ago and think it should be repeated here: American teenagers like the mid-range bass stuff- whether its Deadmau5 or Datsik etc- because it sounds like a guitar. The sound of the guitar is pretty much like guns and strip malls and football, its sort of part of American culture that you don't really think about until you go elsewhere and realize that there are places where cops dont' have guns, there aren't a starbucks and subway on every block, and people don't play football. I mean American football. (the kind real men play hahaha) I also, by the way, think that a lot of them would really like Joker or Skream if they were actually exposed to it. I know Bassnectar plays Joker tracks a lot. Its also not just that bigger crowds are filled with people that don't understand more...i guess you could say 'complicated' music like Digital Mystikz or Burial. I mean speaking of Burial, are you going to rock a crowd of 5,000 drunk, unshowered teenagers with "Archangel" or "Ghost Hardware"? Its not like 'oh you guys are stupid you dont' get it.' You go to a underground club to hear interesting music, you go to a stadium to get fucked up and party. Theres no reason there ought to be one or the other.

^ ahahahahah im not too sure about the absolute truth behind that but it makes a lot of sense imo XD ahahaha
ive always thought part of it was the fact teenagers have shitty laptops and headphones with no bass in them..
the day i risked myself mixing dubstep for the first time in the shithole i live in.. ive realized most of the midrange stuff doesnt sound as half as serious as the deeper stuff in a club anyways !

Yup. A Kryptic Minds set is a thing of beauty to behold in a club, and yet you'd never think that actually listening to their music at home (unless you have a badbwoy setup!)
I think one of the things that the op is missing (and so many others), is that datsik/excision appeal to a LOT of steppers - new or not. If you don't like them and what they create then that's fine, but at least respect the fact that people do like what they make, and people imitate (original creative is a very rare thing indeed). The very first music were just drums, and these were inspired by the heart beat, as an example.
You yourself are probably inspired by other things - what if someone came up to you and said "omg why do you want to sound like that, it's so... x". You'd probably be offended, tbh. Subjectivity is personal, and easily insulted.

My only real beef with dem is, its like they wrote one good sound and used it over and over and over. Fuck man write a new patch already.

There's really not a whole lot of "brostep" that I get into aside from these 2. I guess I'm sort of in reverse. I started out listening to a lot of this heavier stuff and I've slowly worked my way back to producers like El-B and Digital Mystikz. Now I find myself listening to more of the latter.
I understand the waves of people wanting to make that sound. It's the big thing right now. All the new dubstep fans are most likely going to start out listening to a Datsik and Excision rather than someone like Kode9 or Horsepower Productions. It's just how it's going to happen. Yea it's a bit annoying seeing wave after wave of, "I want to make excision sounds", but I guess everyone starts somewhere. Of course you can always enjoy the fact that 90% of all of those people will never make it passed the first month or so of trying. Most of the ones that do figure it out won't make anything of it cause they'll realize that they'll just be looked at as a wannabes.
