Your stance on torrenting and downloading music.

I was wondering what the ninjas thought about torrenting, downloading and sharing music? I know there is quite a big divide in some scenes but I am curious to what all you peeps think, since, for the most of you, have your head on straight!

I, myself, I'm an avid supporter of torrenting and file sharing! Without it, I wouldn't be the person I am today (bold statement, I know). Through blogs and certain websites, my musical knowledge has surpassed anything I thought I could probably comprehend and has given me, 2 life changing genres for me which would of been hard to get into otherwise. That be grindcore and dubstep.

I think without these means, I wouldn't of bought the records that I have in my collection...and I fully endorse supporting the artists and contributing to your local scene. This year alone I have spent more on records than I have done in the past 5-6 years and I think thats down to file sharing that peoples music gets to be heard.

Anyways, try not to make this augmentative and simply state your opinion and casually debate. No need for people to get their knickers in a twist! (Futile attempt as I bet this thread is waste by page 2.)

When it comes to dubstep I dont have much reason to torrent. I dont mix so I dont buy records and I dont listen to single tracks so only ever download free mixes. I support the scene by attending raves.

I have torrented software and albums by well known bands though and I rape the movie industry hard and always stream movies.

But seriously folks, I occasionally download an album to see what its like, if its good I buy it, if not, pssssshhhhh.I have no problem with torrenting from people making big big £££, ie pop acts if I was so inclined. Its different if its small time producers on the rise.

i do use torrents but not that much, to be honest i should because id save a bit of money because i buy tunes on vinyl then buy the same track on mp3 so i can listen on my computer

Movies I REALLY want to watch, I go and see at the cinema.
Anything else is DVD fodder and I can wait for a decent DVD rip
of most movies. (case in point - Iron Man 2... I waited till the DVD
came out to even attempt finding a decent rip of it.)

I do sometimes, usually to preview stuff, or stuff that's just old. Like to buy a few cds now and then of big releases, just like having them.

Some people who are really into torrenting piss me off. Those who downloads ridiculous amounts of stuff just because they can, never pay for anything or go to gigs, then have the audacity to call themselves a "music lover". If you love it support it.

Also those who try and justify it on some political level. Admit that you're doing it because you don't want to spend your money. Don't have the cheek to say artists should be happy with the praise you give them, no-one would come to where you work and ask your for a big mac in exchange for them complimenting your frying skills.

Im all for downlaoding and torrents. Music has always been a huge part of my life and without youtube/ the internet I wouldn't know like 80% of the shit I listen to. But that being said, I also believe if you are really into a certain scene, especially an underground one, it is important to support the artists who you like a lot.

I don't have much money, so I always feel like me downloading music is a pretty justified act, but when I can I'll make a purchase if I seem to be downloaing a lot of one particular producers tunes.

Also I usually dont download dubstep cuz I'm constantly looking up new songs on youtube and if I did get every song I liked, I'd have absolutely no space left on my hard drive. I usually only download music if I feel like I'll want to listen to it a lot. I've downloaded A LOT of BoC

with regards to music i occasionally use it if
a.) vinyl only and i want say one song and there is no legitimate purchase option digitally (i'm sorry i have too much disposable wax as is and i'm not paying 10+ $ for one tune)
b.) something rare that getting hands on a hard copy would be extremely costly or near impossible with no digital option
c.) only available on itunes (i'm not installing proprietary software from apple to shop when no one else needs to force this)

movies/tv:
a.) it's quicker than running to the store or renting
b.) easier to find older titles and more obscure things
c.) things that never made it to dvd period or slowly are making it
d.) come up with a more reasonable pricing and business model

i'd love it if these industries adapted technology such as torrents as a delivery system (some have) as it's much faster and more efficient than the options they give as is
either you listen to what the consumers are doing in this case downloading and why, or you further isolate your market and spend more protecting dead mediums or pursuing people who "infringe your copyright" when you don't offer the alternative they are using

but when it's priced fairly and easy to find i don't think people have a leg to stand on despite their fighting the system etc moral arguments as everyone deserves to get paid for their work

I see it this way - I've been chucked into a sea of music, and it's far too hard to resist the massive amount of music 'freely available' out there.

And whilst I do torrent small producers and feel bad about it, I'll buy the tracks:

a) If I'm playing the track out (making any cash myself out of it) - I'll buy it on wax.
b) If there's access reasons DH mentioned - only vinyl, etc
c) If I've gotten a certain amount of enjoyment out of certain artists (lots of them out their) then I'll buy their records from then on.

Not to mention the gigs.

It's not that if you download music you're evil, and if you only buy everything you're a sinner.

In this day and age you've got to really contemplate who you're going to part your cash with, and who you're just trying to get a taste of. I think if anything it's made it more personal; rather than buying a couple tunes here and there to experiment and so on, you get a massive range of artists, and you can consciously choose who you want to give your money to.

Sorry, but I can't pay thousands of dollars to try and learn more about a scene and it's artists and so on.
