I can't make bro.

Post by lorankin » Sun Nov 28, 2010 2:25 am

For a style regarded as being formulaic and simplistic, it sure is a tough nut to crack.

Either its simplicity is overstated so people can hate on it, or I am fundamentally broken. Shits hard.

No women for me. :(

Sockpuppet to protect me from shame. Confession booth bizness.

Its not easy mate and I think its harder than ambient because good brostep is all about groove, and that is easier to fake in a more ambient tune. My advice to you is listen to your favorites and see why what they do is good, pay attention to drum beats as they are often more dynamic than some people label them as kick snare etc... Only idiots believe that. It all comes down to practice mate, keep working at it. and study study study

I'm no pro, and not even an experienced beginner yet as far as I'm concerned, but I think if you actually make a nice soft track with no distortion of anything, you can generally just take a melody and pretty much destroy it into something totally different, but if you go about it the right way and the soft track had that groove mentioned above, it should be good, or at least that's the way I think about it.

If everyone quit trying to chase the bandwagons we would have a lot more good music imo. Just make what comes natural. I have made a few bro tracks. I thought it was quite easy and I didn't get much satisfaction from writing it or releasing it. If you want to be the next bro star its better to work on your hairstyle than your bassline.

i think i read in an interview somewhere that's basically what happened to the guys from mount kimbie, they got into production with the intention to make wobble heavy dubstep, realised they weren't so good at it and accidentally came across their (imo) really peculiar and lovely deep/ambient sound, next thing you know they're signed on hotflush

this, and while i have no bias and listen and enjoy both bro and deep, i think i probably wont listen much to my wobble heavy bangers in ten years, but deep heartfelt stuff a la burial, james blake, (insert your favourite "deep" producer here) will most definitely still move me in twenty

just my 2 cents...

I hate making brostep now, but strangely enough seem compelled to keep doing it. I much prefer my chilled tracks...I find bro is easier to make than chilled as you need to capture the abstract things such as emotion. Brostep is more concretete:

Distorted wobble=$

It's like drum and bass. I love liquid and have tried to get into jump up... but my heart will always be with liquid because there's something about the emotion there that takes it further than a jump up track. Same rules apply with brostep/chilled.

But the real secret to a filthy brobble is to process an alpaca fart via a vocoder or become an emo cigarette.

hi i started making dubstep a long time ago, almost like 3 weeks now, but i still can't make crazy basslines. i guess i might as well give up, because if shit isn't automating itself yet it never will.
