This. I would never have found the majority of the bands I listen to if it weren't for illegal downloading, and happily go to live shows/buy merch/occasional vinyl when my funds allow it.

If you're actually contributing to the dubstep scene you'll be given as much music as you could ever want out of mutual admiration and desire to support the scene. If you're some bush league 9pm dj downloading tunes to try and big up yourself and seem cool then I hope your whole family gets AIDS this christmas.

A lot of people in this thread are making the assumption that people either illegally download or buy tracks. A lot of people I know spend nearly all their money on records and digital tracks and then p2p everything else when they run out of money. If they hadn't dl'ed this stuff they wouldn't have bought it either so it's hardly theft.

Obviously there will be some cheap wankers who don't spend a penny on music but I would bet a lot of downloaders are actually people who support the scene.

Personally, I believe copying is not theft, it's obvious. I draw the line at DJ's playing tracks in bars and clubs that they have illegally downloaded, it's a bit much to make money off tracks you haven't bought yourself

but you're the minority on this site.

there's been at least a couple dozen times in the mixes section, that people (and i'm not naming names because they don't fucking deserve the attention) will go so far as to rip a 1min45sec section of music from a benga essential mix, loop that section as best they can to make it a 3min section and then try and hide the bbc station sound tags by explosions or lazer sounds. ??????? WHO the fuck are these people? are they all from dumb & dumber town?

hey just figured i'd add my two cents cuz this showed up when i was doing a search, and i haven't posted in forever.

Music (and the world in general) is convuluted by money.

In the past, you used to buy albums because it was the most convienient way to get a bands music.

In the present, downloading a torrent is probably faster than going and buying a cd.

IMO (and my band will be releasing an album in jan) the CD medium has basically exausted itself from a business perspective. the album sale issue is more related to the ease of access than the actual cost aspect of the material.

as an artist, i feel it is fufilling to get people to listen to my music. i make money at my job, i don't make money with my music. if i CAN make money, its just an added bonus. i would prefer people know my music for free, and the people who really liked it can see ma shows and buy my merch. even buy my album if you want to get it above 320kb.

the world should worry about sharing. we as musicians exist to share our music with people, and people lose sight of that for $$$. lets make all music free, bands can make money off tours and merch.

do you think linkin park (just an example) is hurting because of the lack of album sales? NO. they make it up in merch and touring.

its the labels that are hurting, and are trying to make us feel responsable. don't, and share your music

But seriously folks, I occasionally download an album to see what its like, if its good I buy it, if not, pssssshhhhh.I have no problem with torrenting from people making big big £££, ie pop acts if I was so inclined. Its different if its small time producers on the rise.

This. I would say "inb4 the shitstorm", but I can see that that has already happened.
