It's not just government documents, assange plans to release incriminating evidence on a certain U.S. bank early next year.

I find this a beautiful thing. Yet another step for real democracy and free information.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikileaks

They're an organization promoting an idea known as transparency in government, which means that they expose the dirty laundry of nations & corporations in the belief that this will make them more responsible, ethical, and accountable because everybody will know what they're up to.

The philosophy behind it is that if you're doing the right thing already, you have nothing to worry about; but if you're doing fucked up shit (like supporting corrupt regimes, poisoning someone's drinking water for your own profit, murdering civilians and covering it up, etc.) then the world needs to be able to see what you're doing so you can be held responsible for your actions no matter what the motivation behind them was. This last part about motivation is key, because lots of governments justify their actions in the name of self-preservation... but in reality this turns into kind of a "do it to them before they do it to me" mentality.

re: What Hayze99 said about the danger here being not that it causes a big ruckus but that people just shrug it off instead - we're well past the point of apathy in most of the 1st world I'm afraid. We're already so overloaded with information - specifically verbal information - that this just becomes yet another howler in the chorus of wolves. For this to mean anything to the average consumerbot it has to directly impact their quality of life. If, say, this information somehow caused a massive reduction in the availability of toilet paper, alcohol, or televised sports - people would riot in the streets.

I'm also a little concerned that this is going to make the reactionary right-wingers in America even more paranoid and xenophobic, too.

i don't see the implications being as huge as the media seems to be making it out to be
the general public may be shocked a bit, but it's government as usual and most people are content to lap up whatever the boob tube news says without looking any further
agreed. i think most people who follow international relations and the news generally are probably not too surprised. it's just funnier when it comes straight out of the horse's mouth. favorite bit has to be the berlusconi bashing. he was none too happy with that apparently. -w-

init. i dont understand how the media aren't concentrating on the democracy angle more than the whinging politicians and their bitchy comments. clinton is getting on my tits. if you dont want the shit you chat to get leaked... dont chat it. fkn politicians.

i hope the bank info is true. its about time there was some concrete dirt on the banks. they get away with too much and dont get chastised for it.

they gave one guy money to steal a bunch of files. Guy was caught and is going to be put on trial for treason.

To be honest once they're done with this source I doubt they get much more from people as they 'leaked' their source fairly quickly and the soldier stands a good chance of being executed for it.

Yeah well the government has a right to bitch really, they're shown for fools. I just wish they'd talk about what was actually in them, because there's some real interesting stuff being released. Some of it's old news, some of it confirms rumors, and there's all the new material especially on the middle east.

WTF - he's wanted for sex crimes in Sweden?!

Either this is deliberate character assassination or his credibility is about to be seriously depleted.

such an obvious smear it's ridiculous. Interpol arresting alleged rapists? ROFL and then wait till you find out what the "victims" are complaining about. The only reputation this is gonna harm is interpol's. What a joke
