Artists v. Personality

Does an Artist's personality/attitude have an effect on the way you view their music? Say, if someone makes phenomenal tunes but you meet them and they are a complete dick.. would you be less inclined to support them or play/buy their stuff?

Sorry if this is a bit random but I think about this a lot and over the years. Especially when I was younger and into DnB, I would meet these guys that were practically my heroes and some of them were real jerks IRL. After which I tended to stop buying their vinyls and listening. Keep in mind this is when I was about 17-20 and a lot more impressionable. (I'm in my early 30's now lol)

So in short, be cool to the people that support you.. I guess?

But yes, not based on people I've met, but just some of the personality's of artist's I listen to drive me not to listen to them as much, such as Jay Z, I dislike him as a person, so I dislike his music.

Nope. Obviously I would prefer it if they were cool. But a good tunes a good tune, its a standalone piece of art irrespective of the artists personality, political views or hairstyle. Although I think that if the person really is that much of a prick, that might come across in their music. In which case I wouldn't support it.

I have stopped buying music when Iv'e read an interview and the artist makes some foul comments I didn't like or I hear them bragging about wealth or fame. Ego has no place in my music library. But remember some of these artist play a part and are not like that day to day.

Wrote out a big paragraph, but didn't want to be a tnuc and name names, so to cut it short, yeah- Being courteous and humble goes a long way imo.
By all means, I totally understand no one can be 100% personable 100% of the time, but.... if [someone who I now think is a pretentious twit] is putting out an image that they're smart and articulate but then starts to condescend me when I have a differing, VALID, opinion I'm gonna think you're a pretentious twit.

I generally don't care unless it hinders the music at all, then in that case I probably wouldn't want it anyway.

Just face it, the majority of people (especially artists) are dicks so why be surprised or bothered by it. The final product is what matters to me.

hahaha there was this very prominent DnB DJ from NY in the 90s.. I swear I thought this dude was the best. Pretty much I'd buy every mixtape he'd put out and see the dude play every chance I got.. He was playing at a club in Baltimore and I approached him and simply asked "hey what time do you go on man there are no time slots posted anywhere? " ... and the guy was more than a jerk lol.. he kind of tore me up and humiliated me in front of my friends. Too cool for school. After that I never really supported him or anything affiliated with, stopped buying records from his shop...etc. fuck that shit. kinda funny now.. I'd prolly just punch the fucker's lights out or something now lol...

You know, most artists I like, that I met (and those are a lot, since I host a dance) have been awesome as shit.

Hasn't changed my view on their music, though. Even some that I've met who've been kinda... dicks or have made no impression on me at all. Good music is good music.

I think personal experience has a lot to do with it; I have no problem supporting Miles Davis' estate, despite his record of domestic violence. At the same time, some of the people I've met or done business with personally have left me a little bit bitter, and it definitely keeps me from buying their music or supporting them.


Yet on the other hand, some of the people that are really down-to-earth have left a huge positive impression on me; Shackleton went out of his way to do something nice for me and went far beyond what I would expect someone of that level of fame to do for an unknown. 2562/A Made Up Sound is one of the friendliest people I've met in any music scene, and it's a good feeling to see someone like that continue to succeed more and more. Thomas Fehlmann asked ME if I had time to chat about Ableton and doing live sets after I mentioned I was working on one but struggling a bit.


For what it's worth, Mala was really nice when I met him; it's important to put things into perspective and realize that people have good and bad days like the rest of us...I don't think any of us can say we haven't been a dick to others when we're in a bad mood, it's just that we have the benefit of second chances (or not leaving such a strong impression since we're not famous).

It makes a difference to me, when I was in my impressionable youth a local promoter/dj would ask before booking if the artist is a douche bag outside of "work" which got me thinking.
I think to some extent their attitude comes through in the music. But if the music is good enough they get a hall pass, like I have heard Richard D James is a twat, but his tunes are so good it wouldent matter much to me, besides I know I will never meet him. I did meet and party with the guys from De La Soul and they are cool as fuck, same with Beck and Ween they make awesome music and are awesome people. I'm pretty sure people like Tiesto and 50 cent would be the big assholes as they seem to be.

I'm definitely more inclined to actually support the artists that post here and the bigger names do that q and a thing here because it shows there good people answering all of our questions and giving us advice.

Well, if I like an artists music...get the chance to meet them, and find out they are really cool/chill in person, then I am WAY more inclined to support them/pay for their shit/see them live/spread the word etc, etc etc. Why wouldn't I?

If I like an artists music and get a chance to meet them and they are a complete asshole, then the very opposite most likely happens. I may still like their songs...but I sure as hell wont be going out of my way for them.
