Re: Artists v. Personality
He is quite the opposite from the numerous things I read, he didn't have the time for the bullshit that surrounds the music making, so was uncomfortable with the whole celebrity/media thing and came across as difficult to the press.ninjadog wrote:Richard D James is a twat.

yeah dudestep correct wrote:Does an Artist's personality/attitude have an effect on the way you view their music? Say, if someone makes phenomenal tunes but you meet them and they are a complete dick.. would you be less inclined to support them or play/buy their stuff?
Sorry if this is a bit random but I think about this a lot and over the years. Especially when I was younger and into DnB, I would meet these guys that were practically my heroes and some of them were real jerks IRL. After which I tended to stop buying their vinyls and listening. Keep in mind this is when I was about 17-20 and a lot more impressionable. (I'm in my early 30's now lol)
So in short, be cool to the people that support you.. I guess?
totally

Haha, I'm reading his autobiography at the moment, man was a prick!cloak and dagger wrote:I think personal experience has a lot to do with it; I have no problem supporting Miles Davis' estate, despite his record of domestic violence.
Good tunes though.
My name is Dom and I like making ambientish music and drinking tea. Nice to meet you.

Well what if you find out that your favourite artist is a racist or even worse a paedophile?

I'd feel well sad if it transpired that Burial was a paedophile

Although I was never into Chase & Status, them remixing and releasing an anti-gay tune (Capleton's "Slew Dem" --> "Duppy Man") made it really easy to decide to never give them a penny.

Re: Artists v. Personality
the only person i can say that ever rubbed me the wrong way was le castle vania, hung out back stage the whole time before his set and had zero crowd interaction before and after it and his stage presence just exuded hipster rock star
still like some of his tunes though

Re: Artists v. Personality
As long as they write music whats appealing to me I don't really care.
We live in a society what would rather parade someones personal life around than say things about their music so I try not to know what they're like as people.

Re: Artists v. Personality
I still listen to Michael Jackson's tunes (inb4 omg he's not a pedo, he's just misunderstood, point is his being one or not doesn't affect my listening to his tunes) and if Gary Glitters tunes were any good I'd probably listen to them too, sadly his tunes are as shit as his ability to make moral judgements...Pedro Sánchez wrote:Well what if you find out that your favourite artist is a racist or even worse a paedophile?
Re: Artists v. Personality
I remain willfully ignorant of the people behind the tracks I like.

Also kind of think that it requires a certain level of dickishness to actually create a new sound or something that is new and innovative. Some kind of maniacalness is required to cast aside convention and actually express invention. Whether that personality trait (?flaw?) carries over into interpersonal interactions... ah whatever, I remain willfully ignorant.

For the most part, tune is a tune. But, if a producer is notoriously a prick, he better make tunes to back it up.

Re: Artists v. Personality
not arsed to be honest, someone's musical output doesn't equate with their personality as much as you might like it to. supported a few dnb acts when i was part of nights back at uni and people we supported were generally cool.
special shout-outs goto dj yoda for coming back to a houseparty we arranged for him to play at. although this was the 3rd time we supported him and got him weed everytime and basically said you've fucked off after your gig both times before you gotta come back and hang tonight. was slightly harsh on him though cos he hadn't been sleep for ages cos he had come direct after recording the set for breezeblock that him and greenpeace did.
big ups to j majik for asking me to carry on spitting on his set after i introduced him.
biggest of the ups goto nookie and fivealive for being the only people we supported that shared their rider with us. no-one else shared any beers with us despite the fact we didn't get any for playing, but they did and also bought gals backstage as i was skinning up so made me feel quite badman.

Re: Artists v. Personality
a good number of hip hop artists claim to be sociopathic murderers who have no problem destroying their communities by distributing vast amounts of narcotics...yet people (used to) rush to buy their albums in droves.

of course, a lot of them are lying. but a fair few aren't...

Re: Artists v. Personality
kills it. found out big pun was a wife beater and lost all respect. the music to a big extent is that person. thats how i feel anyway.Pedro Sánchez wrote:Well what if you find out that your favourite artist is a racist or even worse a paedophile?

Re: Artists v. Personality
Well as with the case of Chase & Status, to me there's a difference between someone's personality backstage and the statements they choose to make with their music.

If they make good tunes then I will listen to their music, if they are dickheads I wont hangout or talk to them. If you making really good music you make really good music, and will always have my respect from that standpoint.

Re: Artists v. Personality
If I met them in person and they were a dick, it'd definitely effect me cause that'd be what I remember everytime I hear a tune of theirs. Even if people make bold statements in interviews and stuff I'm not gonna pretend I know the guy from that one statement. Especially with big name artists, I imagine that so many people either kiss your ass senseless or just hate on you on a daily basis, so an ego is more understandable really. But if you turn out to be a racist/homophic/etc. bastard (looking at you, ted nugent) then hell no.
Re: Artists v. Personality
exactly one of the reasons i don't listen to very much hip hop... beats can be good, rhymes can flow, but goddamit i refuse to give people like that money. maybe it's a bit hypocritical, but oh well...qwaycee_ wrote:a good number of hip hop artists claim to be sociopathic murderers who have no problem destroying their communities by distributing vast amounts of narcotics...yet people (used to) rush to buy their albums in droves.

also, gotta say that seeing excision and datsik posting on these boards and being such nice guys (from what i've seen) has made me really appreciate them all the more. if you're talented AND down to earth, i believe that you should succeed. if you're a dick who has talent, i honestly couldn't care less. you may as well fuck off and die for all i care...
