it really depends on the track these days. often its atmospheres, other times a sample or something like that, occasionally drums, almost never bass though.
i find sometimes ill start with drums, build some stuff around them and then get rid of them and put some new ones in, or completely rearrange them.

definitely agree that laying down the drums first ends up paired with a 3-, to at most, 8-tone melody lol, pretty boring eventually. laying down synths and knowing scales usually helps a bit for me. even english literary terms i find help me sometimes, like a story plot

i just load up an amen and 3 scrapyard oscs in massive and patch it through the Fruity Dubstepizer. cut print send to label profit.

I use the Alpaca edition of Massive, can get some really filthy sounds out of that synth

Varies. Almost always nowadays with at least a minimal drum sketch so I can get the timing of phrases of bass or leads or general noise fuckery. Been completely unable to write bass lines lately... WTF!!!
