I hate it when that happens...... I neraly always manage to get them back on though. But its a lonely 20 - 30 mins playing to an empty floor.

There is a great quote from someone like Coldcut (or maybe Frank Tope/Bill Brewster), about 'purging' a dancefloor - deliberately playing something you know won't sit right with a lot of the people dancing. It's about giving yourself a clear canvass to start with, like a fresh start and working it back up your way, as opposed to continuing the path that the previous DJ has trodden.

It is!

But actually in some ways it is cool to be able to experiment with different stuff. That is not always possible with a dancefloor going crazy..
I was able to drop Mala - Education and James Blake - Klavierwerke. Both tunes that I definitely wouldn't be able to drop in front of a packed dancefloor here in Denmark.
People just want them bangers...

I just play what I play. At the end of the day if a promoter books me, he/she "should" know what I play and if he/she doesn't - should ask and maybe suggest what kind of vibe I should pack into the bag.

Granted, that attitude won't get me ontop of flyers and i'll probably be opening act to 90% of the gigs I get but at least I ain't being paid, to play what the promoter could easily do himself.

Clearing floors isn't a bad thing either - even if a DJ is playing a amazing set, just like the one before him - I can't handle being on the dancefloor longer than an hour at one time, I need to go get a drink, have a cigarette, sit down for a couple of minutes.

And thats the main reason why plastic people is the one, best seating area, ever. haha

Always preferred longer warmup sets/room 2 sets anyhow. Playing an hour of 'bangers' is just boring, any fool can do it.

Amazing club in terms of decor and arrangement, nicely priced drinks.. AMAZING 2nd room sound system..

First room? If a tune has a riser in it, be prepared to be deaf, the acoustics just make everything above 1000hz sounds horrible, almost deafening! Its a shame as well cause I really like it as a club.

See, was in Cargo Saturday night and didn't venture into room 2 for the whole night. Don't recall the main room system being particularly poor at any point, even with the mnml tchn playing out all night.

I agree! When I finish playing I would rather think that I was playing my set in the way I like it and with my own style rather than selling out and play an hour of shit tunes that has been rinsed to death for the past month...

And yes, at the end of the day its down to the promoter to care for the type of dj he is booking.

But I actually thought that a mainstream audience, like the one I had this weekend, would be into the crazy wobblers like Cokis Goblin or Horrid Henry. But that wasn't the case.
They were all hyped when the dj after me was playing fucking Rollergirl......... jeez.....

Been there twice now, for 2 dubstep nights- both times, everyones cramped into room 2 cause the first room just has so much top end even using earplugs makes it screechy and impossible to listen to.

Room 2 is banging, bar, upstairs seating area and that balcony!

lol i tend to introduce myself at the start of a set neways lol. just run summat at 1/3 volume in the background building up, kinda like a radio set. Gives you a feel of whats going on. Got a habit of droppin generic "club bangers" first up neways, not always a good idea but ssometimes keeps people interested. Then a lil warm down bit at the end.
Still i dont really care once im up there n ive usually had a couple of zoot by start time lol. I always think private parties are the best neways, always a good crack to play specially if its just an open set with the odd request. Get people onto a certain genre and its all you will play for the next 45 mins :P.

Providing my day aint too stressful n i got green waiting for me at yard, the producca continues into the smalls of the morn lols.

hey hey, as "producers" as well as mixers you can do some tweakage on the fly to adjust to the acoustics. Not ideal but saves a few peoples ears :P most people wont even notice you do it either but you can take pride in knowing nobody thought, " this guy is whack did my ear drums are bleeding" lol

If the sound engineer has done his job properly, and the production itself is mixed correctly, then as a DJ you shouldn't ever have to adjust the EQs more than 12 o clock for any band. Though tbh, I can't think of a single club I've played in where this has happened.

Wub yah agreed mate, should never have to, a club should have the acoustics set up well in the first place on the placement of speakers and balanced to suit the room. It appears to be something that clubs are less inclined to invest in. Suppose these days there are alot less "gigs" and more club dj playing generic poop. So a mixture of this and the generic loving band wagon that seems to go out on razz not giving a crap or even knowing about the acoustics of the room. If theres cheap booze, cheesey music thats loud, then people seem to pile in!

I'm hoping to see a rise in small pubs that allow all day dance orientated events to take place. Not quite on the par of scuminess like George IV used to be, but along those lines.
