Post by louieb » Thu Dec 09, 2010 2:47 am

Any tips on creating this sound. Im not looking for some exact how to or anything as i don't want to create this exact sound but i find it very enjoyable and would like to learn how some of it is done. Anyway for a little tip from me if you want echo ghost like whatever you want to call effect on a vocal sample reverb + dealy and maybe flanger works for me.

For mt kimbie & james blake I like to treat vocals similar to their style. Pick out vocal hooks/samples you like and make a few copies and pitch them and stretch them to your liking. Another thing when using a pitch plug in is to leave the wet/dry level somewhere in between so you get that warped harmony where the signal from your vocal sample is outputting its original note plus the note you're pitching it up/down to. Also the "reverse reverb" effect combined with those pitch effects sounds nice if you tweak it right. If you're using Logic the EnVerb effect is lovely.

Kimbie and Blake record most of their sounds with field recorders… I’d start there… you need “real life” sounds to sound like them… like they said… throw massive in the trash…

(Although that grunge chord playing right from the start of Maybes is an FM8 preset… found it by accident one day… tbh I was like :o then I realized, even if I had found it first I never would have made anything good as Maybes with it, so who cares)

dont listen to anyone telling you to put a synth down, saying massive is only good for bro-step is doing it a great disservice. You can use any kind of synth for any kind of sound, im trying to learn gladiator right now .... its a mindfuck haha

Just curious what you mean by their sound, those 4 artists sound nothing alike to me, save for NOT being brostep or even dubstep.

What about their sounds are you looking for direction on?

I'd say they all have an organic tone to their productions which is a result of live sampling/recording and background ambience being used as a tool.

agreed theyre all very different but there are def threads that tie them together. vocal sampling and manipulation, organic sounds and amience, unique broken beat patterns, natural drums, not really being dubstep but still thrown in that arena anyway, etc. fuck it add burial to the list as well.

Vertical is an FM8 or 7 preset i think but Maybes is an acoustic guitar from an old and very different song from before Mount Kimbie. Massive has been used from time to time!

I have FM8, and its on there exactly like it sounds in Maybes, reverb, distortion, and all… I’ll find it later and let you know the patch title

Well as to the question of what specific sound i did not mean to say they all sound exactly the same or anything along those lines. I was asking for genreal tips for their general sound using IMO (probally wrong)the organic sounds ambient effects nice sounding drums and a warm subbass and still making it sound in place in a track like i said i do not wish to re create a song just get tips on the general idea. Anyway thank you ketmamine mta7338 and Kochari for the tips. Corpu5 I agree all synths are usefull and are what you make them. Also nice track synthlf
More tips are welcome and if anyone is interested little of topic but vengance mimimal house actually has some interesting preccusion sounds and fx that can be used in dubstep garage uk funky ect IMO.
As well freesound.org can provide some interesting sounds.
