Mala/Goth-Trad @ Club Mago, NAGOYA 20.3.07 pictures

Post by fushimi » Wed Mar 21, 2007 2:11 am

10:30am. Just back from Nagoya for Mala/Goth-Trad. No sleep but I hit the Red Bull a bit too hard when I was flagging so I'm wide awake, feeling great, and have an uncontrollable tremor in my right arm.

Club was a bit bigger than Sunsui in Osaka (http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=16940)

Four silk screens in front of the stage with a gap in the middle. Some decent visuals were projected on the screens, but nothing too amazing (or distracting from the sound).

Highlights: Goth-Trad played mainly the same set as in Osaka, it seems like his mixing board and laptop setup isn't as flexible (or expensive I guess) as someone like Underworld, where they can mix any loop from any track together on the fly. I'm sure his live show'll continue to develop. Not saying it was bad though, huge as in Osaka. Third track in the set (just after Back to Chill) is mental, archipello'd rhythm and wobbling bass (but not sub-bass), then it just goes off. If you get me.

I know it isn't a big secret, but watch out for Goth-Trad on the fifth Deep Medi release, he's got his Deep Medi portrait as the wallpaper on his phone.

Mala belted it, highlights Anti-Tapped (2 rewinds), System and the huge kick on Jah Power Dub. He played a surprisingly different set to Osaka 2 days before, not many tunes shared between them.

Starting with 94 jungle before Mala

Nice one. Why Yamanashi? Mount Fuji?

i was there too but . . didnt feel it at all, which is a real shame because i was looking forward to it for a long time.

the bass was lacking in some way... really punchy low mid but hardly any sub at all.

some were skanking at the front but from what i could tell (as in the pic above) most of the crowd was standing still or just swaying a bit until he started playing mid range wobbly stuff... there was basically no sub in the mix, mostly mid to low end and very crisp highs, i think the club wasnt cut out for it. might have been more enjoyable had i felt it in my belly but i could have a conversation quite comfortably on the dancefloor......

he played a few nice reggae refixes, and of course left leg out went down well as did an anti-war dub refix, but a lot of it was much too slow, basic & plodding.

maybe he was tired?

saw you there on the night, fushimi ;)

Yeah...I was thinking who from various scenes might be there, the only person I could remember was you cos I remember I checked out your website after the Gutterbreakz mix and I saw you were moving to Nagoya. Too much skank to say hello..were you with the bird or the guy standing motionless in the middle of the floor emailing all night? As for the system, I don't expect anywhere except a club with a system built for dubstep to do it 100%, but what the hell, it was never gonna be DMZ. Sub was vibrating the floor nicely at some points.

"most of the crowd was standing still or just swaying a bit"

every dance music event in Japan?

"maybe he was tired?"

That's Mala dancing at 6 in the last picture.

Shame you didn't enjoy it.

this was really fun. but i enjoyed the jungle, garage, and goth-trad's set the most to be honest. mala threw down some good stuff, but there was a bit too much half-step for me. meh, wouldn't keep me from going again.
