Re: Girlfriends
Well havn't had a girlfriend in ages which is kind of what drove me to production in the first place, something to fill up my hormone induced longing so I wouldn't mope around all day haha. Now i can't see having one cus for the most part other than sex I find women really get in the way of shit I want to get done.

I dunno about that, but in my experience girlfriends will fight your studio time in a desire to make you watch eastenders

Trust me when I say this: when you find the right gal, it will not only NOT be a conflict any more - it will actually improve your music.whineo wrote:Girlfriends and Music Production

What are peoples opinions on this.
She will be supportive, objective, honest, and know when to say "You look tense. Why don't you go smoke some weed and make a song?"
She will also point out cool sample ideas that you didn't notice in movies you're watching together.

When you meet her you'll know. Until then - hold out. There's a difference between settling down and settling for.

This, x1000000000000000000.
If your woman is getting in the way of your passion/art then shes obviously not right for you - it goes without saying, you won't be able to spend every day you have free time in the studio but if thats what you want, why are you looking for/got a girlfriend in the first place? If you just have needs what need dealing with - 30 quid and a trip down to a shitty pop-club will get that sorted for you.

This, you've already dedicated your life to something, for you to dedicate your life to something else they need to intertwine, music came first, now find a girl who will help with your music and smoke with you, and still inspires you AND isn't clingy (musicians of any sort find that alot).
Better, find a girl who's interested in learning and teach her, then she'll get it and you're home free WITH A PRODUCER GIRLFRIEND to tune battle with at home.
Not one who wants to take you away from your music to watch friends on DVD .....

my SO likes to hit the buttons, but wants nothing to do with all the work goes into making the buttons do stuff. She will never understand, and I can't expect her to.
If i ever meet a woman who's into me and into producing, we're in serious trouble.
Of course if yer watching Friends DVDs, well, I already hate you.

For the record - having a girlfriend whos into producing is awful.
Do you really want your lady to tell you your mix down needs work?

My balls were in a jar on her bedside table for 2 years, now I've got them back though, It's just a place you don't want to be, watching friends that is, there are good sitcoms that aren't obviously made for women, Friends isn't one of those and if there are any women hanging about watching DSF, Fuck you if you think We should watch it.-[2]DAY_- wrote:Of course if yer watching Friends DVDs, well, I already hate you.

Long story short (I think I've blathered about it here before) I had a gal years ago that fancied herself a musician/producer, but didn't have the patience or inclination to sit down and tweak knobs until she got a cool sound. That plus the fact that I had 10 years experience on her made her very resentful - she wanted to know what I knew without having to work for it. Eventually she started slagging my music-making (not the music itself - just the time I set aside to do it.)
Oh, and she also smoked weed and even though she had her own income never bothered to buy any, just raided my stash.

These days it's a whole other story, a happy one at that. Mrs. Alphacat has her own interests, passions, talents, and tastes that are not the same as mine but overlap nicely. Bonus: she doesn't smoke weed but is absolutely cool with it.

Re: Girlfriends
I wouldn't mind dating someone who could help me with my mixdowns. But i wouldn't be chilling with a resentful newbie wannabe producer chick who slagged me for working harder than she. I honestly can't stand my mates who want so badly for me to let them "make a beat" and have no fucking clue. I turn on the computer, say "sure! go ahead!" and of course no one can load a sample into NNXT or whatever else, so nothing happens 'til they let me click buttons. Yet no one appreciates what we're actually doing to get sounds.

Just like music - she needs her own time to be creative so its a nice blend, spesh the fact i'll never need to pay another graphic designer again due to her badman drawing skills and my 5 years of graphics haha!
I guess everyone is different but I like my lady having her own talents, passions, goals and drive - that in itself is inspirational.

Re: Girlfriends
i'd say that having a girlfriend (unless she totally gets why you have to spend so long on music) is one of the biggest hits your creative output will ever take.
long long long.

My lady telling me my mix needs work would make me better my mix, I don't really see helpful critique as a dealbreakerlegend4ry wrote:For the record - having a girlfriend whos into producing is awful.

Painters and singers are great too, if you want them to get why you make music all the time, they need to be spending as much time on something else IMHO.

My girlfriends cute as fuck, really likes that i'm producing and in her words 'can't wait till i'm famous!!!!!'.
She's even gone out and bought that 'Generation dubstep' CD for her car, i'm trying to teach her about the better sides of dubstep but it's a start.

Correction: IF your lady had good ears and knew wtf she was speaking of, she'd make you mix better... otherwise you're likely to get layman's critiques, like -Kes-Es wrote:My lady telling me my mix needs work would make me better my mix, I don't really see helpful critique as a dealbreaker.

~ "that one part of the song reminds me of Daft Punk." (sidechaining)
~ "I don't like the drum thingy." "Which drum thingy, darling?" "The one that goes WHOMMMMMM..." "Oh, you mean the bassline? That's not a drum." "Whatever. I hate it." "Why?" "I just do."
~ "Can you put a T-Pain voice in there?"
~ "I like the other song you did better. It reminds me of how much fun we had back then."
etc. etc.
