synths: MASSIVE OR PREDATOR?

Post by comfyman » Tue Dec 14, 2010 5:00 am

hi for the first time im gonna bother buying a decent synth for production.

would you say to go with rob pappens preadator or albino
or native instruments massive?

( Also i know people will say go with what you prefer to use, but im just wanting to know what people have seen the best results from really?)

Well really you can get excellent results from any synth if you know how to work it.

Have you tried the demos for any of those? Predator and Albino are both really good. Predator is kind of a pain to figure out vs Massive which is a lot more user friendly in my opinion. Massive for me is a staple though due to its ease of use and I find myself using it a lot for at least some component of a track.

i'd go for massive if its your first synth. massives the easiest to get into.

Massive for sure. Predator is nice but doesn't have the same amount of modulation control that massive does. I find it easier to get a nastier mid-range bass out of massive than it is with predator... but both are still very good synths. Try the demos of both and see which one you like.

bear in mind that there's only so much you can do inside a synthesizer, and with massive that's already a lot.
almost all "sick" basslines, be it stuff like noisia or "filthy" dubstep like datsik/excision are made from reese sounds, which you can make with virtually every synthesizer out there. the real magic lies in the gradual process of applying small amounts of effects to your sound, exporting that and putting it in a sampler, splitting the frequencies, applying small amounts of effects again, et cetera et cetera.

think of it like a folded steel katana, it's simple small steps repeated over and over again with surgical precision to yield maximum effect.

Download the demo software of each one, run through a couple of tutorials on YouTube, then buy the one you like the feel of most.

Demos demos demos.

How powerful is your computer? If weak, get albino, if strong, get massive. Gladiator sounds good, but you should definitely NOT install the legit version. Buy it, but you may consider using the crack because it is less invasive to your system. This is of course, illegal.

I'm using Alchemy myself, but Gladiator looks nifty...how is it invasive?

Get Albino anyway, I love that synth...

Altho on topic for the OP, I recently bought massive (50% off FTW), and have since used it in every tune. Once you start delving into it you get mad sounds out of it!!

And it's easy to make the midrange bass in...lol
