I saw someone post something about a night in Cape Town doing dubstep a few months back, but didn't hear much after that. Cape Town needs one, I dropped a few dubstep ones at the Sound Squad new years party and within two minutes I'd already had 3 very angry (& drunk) drum & bass heads come up and tell me to play it faster

I can see the dubs doing well there though, I'll come back to drop it there fo

so has bass meditation reached cape town since december?

finding out more about the scene was thwarted by my host who stopped me from going to Tonic cos it was scary and told me that in Africa they only listen to kwaito, jazz or gypsy music. preferably at the same time.

Kwaito is big and Psy-trance is big there too, but you'll hear plenty of 'pop' electronica on the radio there, the urban heads seem to be more into Breaks and Drum & Bass even more so, on previous trips I alwasy dropped plenty of dub & ragga style breaks and they went down well for the Cape Town crowd, however those were more up tempo, not sure how long it will be for the 'Bass - Meditation' to set in though.. I hope soon.

ive been living in cape town for the past year and a half and am trying to come up with schemes to put on some dubstep nights. dnb,eletro and breaks have been getting more and more popular over the past year, so your gonna have to trick them into going...

it really wont take long for dubstep to get started out here. ive already gotten a few people into it and word spreads OVER fast in CT, its just about getting the 'right' people in the 'cape town scene' to go along, and once theyre in everyones in (sad but true).

that night at tonic didnt work because tonic is a shit venue and noone goes there - attracts the 'wrong' crowd and blahdeblah. capetonians are pretty open to new sounds its just about exposing it right.

so whos in capetown? and more importantly...whos in cape town that wants to help me spread the dubstep sound FAST?!? (its gonna have to include freebies.....)

I was in Cape town about 3 years ago or something and first night there i met stuart aka Rawkiss he used to do digital justice and run a magazine online called the breakdown but i aint heard from him in a while they all used to do the same night cant remember the club name but counterstrike and the rest was dj-ing there think i had some fine black label at one of these guys houses, seemed like they had a tight scene there sure they will embrace the dubstep.

Do they still do those nights????

Talk to the people of African Dope. They can probably point you in the right direction. I've been there a few years back and as said: psytrance is big, but about everyone i talked to knew the geezers at AD - they're well known in the underground dance scene in Cape Town.

i'm from cape town, living out in ldn now tho

the virus is spreading fast, it's just needs someone to kick it of. i dropped some at fiction when i was home on holiday a few months ago and everyone loved it.

i think fletcher from african dope has already been play some dubstep out in some of his sets. but i doubt they'll get involved with a dubstep night. african dope are on their own mission and have shit loads going on already.

a lot of the drum crew are pretty into it too. so if it want to get something going, try hooking up with them. justin from counterstike loves it and last time i spoke to him he was keen on getting someone to play in the second room at homegrown, the massive dnb monthly. if you can drop some dubstep in there it's guaranteed to blow up

the crew at www.biglove.co.za would get into it too

african dope wouldnt be on it.

didnt realise fletcher was droppin some dubstep,that must be pretty recent,might have to chat to him.

mark/niskeron from biglove was on dubstep, and im sure hes still feelin it. but his dnb thursday nights at fiction have blown up. hes on some nex missions now. i remember talks of dubstep at 2nd room at homegrown but that was last year sometime-i think its too much hassle for him to start gettin into something new when the thing he was working at for so long is finally working.im not even sure hes still doing homegrown so much now. homegrown is pretty dutty tho(as is mercury). went to see diesel boy there last week and it was horrible.
would rather try it out at fiction or something.
its hard finding a decent venue with good sound.

theres a new bar thats opened up opposite fiction. im gonna try openin up some nights there.good vibe,easy to fill blahbalh. gonna hand out some free sample cds. put them in the smaller stores etc. lets see what happens. hopefully itll happen soon and not next year. im getting itchy feet.

so a lot has happened since that last message!

a few friends and i have been throwing a monthly night at a club called fiction..
strictly dubstep/garage/grime.. but mostly dubstep. had our 1st birthday party in feb.. joshua black was down and played an AMAZING set. been getting around 400 people in each night. and we get booked to play dubstep at other nights aswell. so... dubstep is getting bigger here each month! [next party is tonight

looking to bring some more internationals down soon. everyone should come to cape town

all those guys are killing it at the moment.
haven't actually heard any of ben sharpa's new stuff but heard lots of goodness about it. [sharpa's not really around here much anymore either, hes doing tings in europe..]
so much talent going on this side of the world. hopefully it will start getting exposed to the UK sound systems soon.

i played sound squad 2009. i played a dubstep set as did hyphen & sfr and im sure the mix n blend boys dropped some tunes . and everyone loved it! shit went off. just to show how things have changed this side
