Hardware for Live Dubstep, Suggestions?

Yup, you got it spot on dub fiend. We have been doing this the last couple of years in Oz as a two piece (MIDI bass, MIDI drums, Ableton + VSTs, 2 laptops).

Engine-EarZ do it live, have a drummer, a guitarist, some people sitars/tablas etc. and then hes got two or 3 midi controllers/synths (I cant tell but it looks like an R3 and a XioSynth) and an APC 40.

man check out EOTO, they are a 2 peice live band and use dubsteppy sorta sounds in there shows. the drummer is incredible. dunno if itll help but....

that's no live dubstep for shit. They play the songs off Ableton and let out a few things that are filled up by live musicians. That's not what the person meant. They don't use hardware synths, or even keyboards to say.

Have you used the Sonuus? I bought one and there was way too much latency, and its monophonic at best. Roland developed a polyphonic guitar -> midi setup called 'v guitar' but I haven't had the extra cash to try it out.

Those black and white keyed objects Benga and Artwork seem to be tapping on, seems to be awfully similar to a keyboard.
They were just the first thing that sprang to mind at the time. Modestep would be a better example tbh.

Live sets are mostly about preparation.
It doesn't matter much what you use - livid ohm or apc40 or launchpad or a keyboard.
It's all about how you prep your live performance so be prepared to spend many hours working.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I would way rather see a live show with real hardware not laptops and controllers.
I want to do the same thing but I don't know anyone who plays guitar and likes dubstep.
I have a Roland mc-307 I found at a pawn shop for cheap, and I want to get me a Korg Electribe both of those are groove boxes but hook up a midi keyboard and you got a synth you can play um with a keyboard. You pretty much can't go wrong with anything by Korg or Roland.
Hit up craigslist and see whats out there.

Look at mpd's from Akai. I bought one for some beatmaking, now I don't do that at all but it has numerous uses.
You can map it to do anything.

Guitars in dubstep are really shit, in most cases anyway. I'm all for cool ways to play things live but they just don't work unless it's a proper maestro flamenco/classical guitarist. Like that Engine Earz thing, how lame does the guitar sound? Might as well have fucking Zak Wylde jamming along.

Sooo I have been doing a lot of research, trying to figure out what would be the best for me before i drop the cash and i stumbled across something amazing. http://www.keithmcmillen.com/products/k-bow/ This plus a midi 5 string violin and ableton and i'm all set. This is ideal for me considering i have been playing the viola for almost 16 years now. Only problem, set up would be around 10 large >_<. Its nice to dream though. For those of you who wont look at the link and watch the videos the kbow is a kevlar/carbon fiber violin bow that transmits midi information via bluetooth to a computer. It takes your; grip pressure, bow hair pressure, x/y/z data from three accelerometers, the distance of the bow from your fingerboard. Run this into Ableton to modulate parameters of a soft synth and and the possibilities are endless. With classical training, Dubstep bass lines would be like playing twinkle twinkle little star for me. Is there a drool smiley?

These next generation MIDI instruments are going to change the face of electronic music (in a performance sense anyway). My band uses MIDI instruments (bass guitar and drums) and one thing we found with using the technology is that you have to learn how to play it within its limitations, which takes some time. Its almost like learning a new instrument. It would be interesting what sort of latency the MIDI violin can run at. Thanks for posting, thats really interesting.
