Memory Requirements For Producing?

Post by chrisb-2k7 » Fri Dec 24, 2010 3:10 pm

I've been trying to make some tracks recently and am unable to do so. Every time i start processing parts of my track, my DAW (Cubase) starts crackling and skipping. I have even tried bouncing the midi files down to audio to remove any processers but the same problem still occurs. I've been reading some forums and the main answer for everything is 'go into your sound card control panel and put the buffer up'. I have done this and still not much difference so I am guessing it is my memory?

My memory at the moment is 2 gig RAM. What is the minimum requirements in order for my DAW to function properly?

Much Appreciated. :D

Check your latency settings, 2gb ram should be enough.

if your using a lot of plugin's it could be hard though. An upgrade to 4 wouldn't kill you.

-q-

more likely to be lack of processor power tbh. 2gb should be enough ram really, ive only got 756 and i can get away with a few instances of massive/absynth/sylenth etc along with plenty of audio tracks and quite a lot of vst fx and my shit machine is ancient now.

what operating system are you using? (im guessing youre not mac) xp is still the most tweakable for audio work, well worth installing if youre on a low powered machine (if youre using vista you might as well bin it now tbh -w- ). theres a good list of things you can switch off here http://tarekith.com/assets/XPTweaks.htm makes a big difference.

if you have a low powered comp getting rid of all the shit on there thats not necessary for production is essential

also what soundcard/AI are you using? if you dont have one are you using asio4all? (not ideal but works an might help a bit)

Your guess was right lol no im using deluxe as my operating system and I do have a creative soundblaster sound card but yes I am using asio4all as i find it works alot better than the soundblaster card.

yeh well stick a stripped back copy of xp with service pack 3 on it and it will run like a dream (well, as good as it can be - someone did actually up a stripped back version just for audio work with all the tweaks already done, dont know if its still available). Before i got drunk one night and thought my laptop was a toilet i had it booting and usable within about 12 seconds. was only 2gb with something like 1.8ghz single core processor. my desktop is about ten/eleven years old and tbh it is on its way out but i can still get away with with 40+ tracks of audio and thats also running massive and a bunch of plugs like waves etc
