i've been making some purple stuff lately, been using an alesis micron, getting some lovely sounds from it but i dont like working with audio as my main synth. tried to recreate on massive but it sounds so weak compared.

unison detune + portamento are your friends with purple sound :)

Can someone give me tips / trick's on how to make this?

Thx
Hello Krucial, I have always been interested in the purple sound myself and after reading the thread thought I would have a tinker with some synth sounds etc, I have come up with something that sounds pretty close to the joker sound and although I use reason if this is the sound you are looking for I would be happy to explain in a post the step by step on making the synths, anyways I dont have a sound cloud or anything so have had to post a link to the 30 second loop of the track in progress on DIVshare which is pretty annoying but will only take about 20 seconds to open and listen to:

drink bare amounts of ribena. not the light stuff though, that'll make your synths sound weak. then add some cough syrup lil wayne styleee

that's what purple sound is to me
no overthinking or processing, just pure musicality
+1 on this, his music is relatively simple but done to perfection

When I think of the purple sound, I think of the sounds the Sega Genesis/Megdrive used to make. The reason for was that the Genesis had a FM synth chip built into it & a lot of "purple" sounds are actually sounds you can make with a FM synth. I would try to get a hold of something like FM8 or any good FM synthesis VST. Hopefully that'll help you get the Joker style sound a little easier.

actually, here an example of how similar the Sega Genesis and the "purple" sound are :)

get a sq wave and use a vibrato effect, then automate how dry/wet it is to get character, try automating the pitch on the tails for more character, play with legato.

i'd say the joker noises aint to hard to recreate its his keys that compliment the sound so well.

Grumblex wrote:Open up massive get 3 saws all detuned at around -24 semitones (obv play around e2)

then open up another massive and get 3 more saws. one detuned around 0 semitones and the others detuned around -12
put both of these massive inro the same mixer channel add a bit of tape saturation for warmth also a little reverb and boost a tiny bit around 550hz and at around 2.5 khz obv depending on how it sounds but this was the situation for me then cut out around 80-90 hz for the sub

then a 3rd massive for just the sub

add some glide/portamento on all these massives (but not too much)

remember to have these all these massives at the same glide setting so they all work together :) glide is a very important part in jokers sound

hope this helped :P

so i knocked up this patch and put together a lil tune to give u a taster of how it should sound if i have actually wrote it up right :) (when ive finished this tune ill probs give it out for free anyway :P)

Substitute the word "Massive" here for pretty much any VST of your choice unless you have the sort of computer that can beat grandmasters at chess...
