Hey all,
A new technique I have been using has been to group the basslines (or different tracks that comprise a single bassline) and route them through another channel that is high pass filtered. Then I would add a sub to create an even bass sound throughout the song. When making these sub basslines, do you think that the MIDI data should follow the other bassline exactly, or be a simplified version?
Cheers,
lopht

Re: Sub + Other Bassline
my two cents is that it should be simplified, or at least i tend to keep the notes or MIDI data for the sub as main notes, as the sub adds lower frequency dimension to the bassline, whereas if its the same MIDI data as your mids and highs, i find it takes away from the presence it creates
but whatever works for you, or you think sounds good, is what you should follow! im just a lil nooblet with many questions of my own lol

Good stuff, thanks for the video. as well Wub, however do you think that high passing the other non-sub basslines is a worthwhile technique?

Have a gander at this;

It's my way of doing the bassline splitting thing you've mentioned. It doesn't work in all instances though, and is very much a rough guide as opposed to a set of definitive rules
Re: Sub + Other Bassline
Both ways are used a lot tbh, there are tracks where the sub follows the bassline note for note.
Others are really interesting when they have them doing different things but both complimenting each other nicely, I personally would rather hear this but there are great songs from both camps
