CHICAGO FOOTWORK

Post by n_symon » Wed Feb 25, 2009 5:44 am

Hey this is Nick from Chicago. I guess most of you are from the UK, I think that's grand! Anyway, let me share some underground music from Chicago. It's called 'footwork', sort of an offspring of 'juke' which is itself descendant from ghetto house. The production is pretty startling, and the dancing is incredible. The one producer who exemplifies the footwork style is a fellow named 'DJ Nate'. Other notable producers are tha pope, Dj Chip, Dj Slugo (I guess more ghetto house), etc....

There's a public acces show called 'Wala Cam' which covers the competitive footwork scene:

pretty cool dancing, alot like dnb steppin i see

music is pretty decent too i guess, not to familiar with ghetto tech and all that, but sounds like an agressive mix of hip hop and house kinda? or am i just totally off?

No you're spot on. As I see it ghettotech is a really aggressive mix of really stripped down house, usually just some 808 type drums played fast, with some hyper repetitive vocal loops. It's usually pretty ribald. Footwork has the same tempo but goes into new sonic territory and really plays with the vocal samples alot. There's a whole lot of pitch shifting.

really like that style. lots of creativity in that scene.

so footwork is dif from juke? ive heard all those names used for the same style. booty house geto house hardcore house and juke. and some djs mix it up with geto tech.

those dances are cool. mostly sped up house moves. with some gangsta walking, jit, and other regional styles thrown in (theres even some DC beat ya feet moves in one of the clips). waiting for those cats to catch on to cali columbian salsa shines and african sabar - now everything can be seen on youtube.

Just learned of this yesterday after seeing the Planet Mu "Bangs & Works Vol. 1" compilation. The sound really grabbed me, and the dancing is pretty dope as well. Anyone got mixes, tracks, or links to share?
