Vinyl Heads... What's Your Set-Up?

Post by yaga » Tue Dec 28, 2010 2:59 pm

Revamping my audio, & was wondering what you folks had set-up. Basically fishing for ideas & the like.

I just have some Hi-Fi speakers hooked up to a Yamaha receiver & an extra deck hooked up to it (an older Numark) via a small pre-amp ( No sub-woofer yet! :( ) . Also, i don't know much about receivers but was looking at some vintage Marantz (from the 70's) on ebay & have heard a whole lot about them. What other brands are good & dependable? This time around i'm thinking of building my own speakers (brother's a carpenter & could get me some quality wood & stain).

Other than my technics, and mackie d2, I have a realllly old pioneer amp with some wharfdale raw wire speakers, and they've worked pretty well for me for a year now, but are much past their primes. Since im taking a loudspeaker design class Im gonna try to build a new setup with a sub, piss off my neighbors more

A single Technics 1210 with an old stanton 500 (gonna be upgraded) through a mediocre Sony amp into Mission 70 mk2's
does the job.

stanton str8-60's (LOL) into a Citronic Mix Station (LOLOL) into a Marantz PM 44 SE AMP feeding a pair of Linn Helix speakers

once i have technics i'll be laughing

as it is the amount of feedback i get from a) havin my speakers too close to my decks and b) through my decks being a direct drive motor away from being fisher price turntables means i have yet to get the best out of my amp/speakers.

2 needles made of cat whiskers and duct tape on a ceramic flower plate. It gets the job done.

Can anyone recommend me some good active speakers for my set up? Looking to get the pair for under £200 but will stretch to £250 if they are definitely worth it!

Thanks alot guys. :)

EDIT: Mixing dubstep obviously.

EDIT2: Looking at the M-Audio BX5a with some stands? Not sure if they definitely used for monitoring but people say they have a really good bass...which is obviously what I am after.
