Can anyone still get away with playing deep tunes in a club?

however, as has been said, whats the point if you aren't playing good tunes that mean something to you personally...i disagree with whoever said it doesnt matter how tight the mixing is if it is too deep for the crowd - its all about the mixing if you aint an established producer. No matter how 'deep' the tunes are, if you are banging in mixes quickly, tight and tunes that work well together it sounds so sick even to the most uncultured ear who might not even realise its a mix.

all the best Dj's would tell you its also about feeling the crowd too - even Yunx said in his Q&A that he has some jump-up if he thinks the crowd requires it, but the tunes hes talking about will still be good quality weight, i think theres plenty of deeper hype tunes with loads of energy...tunes like from producers mentioned Jack Sparrow/ Ruckspin - Dread...Cyrus/ N-Type - Concious...Youngsta - Momentum im pretty sure would kill it in any situation..

I've been having a similar dilemma ever since I started DJing, although I've only actually played to people a few times. Most of where I've played has been parties though so most people say like "yeah you should DJ...but don't just play dubstep all night."

IT got on my tits at first but actually it's been a bit of a blessing in disguise because I didn't want to just play the same shit that everyone plays, so like, when my mates were like "oh can you play some electro" I spent a day just trying to find things at 130bpm that I could slot in with what I think of as the best examples of electro music and actually ended up with a reasonably eclectic set that I was happy with that was a bit different. Similar thing when I played after a DnB DJ I though "oh I may as well keep that vibe" so I decided to work out a bit of a dnb set and I'm glad I did.

Sure it's sad if you end up having to play shit no one likes, but I like the challenge of finding decent stuff that you don't hate that also has energy and can keep people on the dancefloor. Night Slugs camp is tops for this sort of stuff, for me :p

But yeah, also that doesn't mean you shouldn't try and get some deep vibes in there as well. I wish I heard more deep sounds out and about so if you slipped the odd one in here and there you might get lucky with the crowd, innit.

Depends who is playing and where they are playing - obviously djs who produce deep and are known for playing deep are going to get a lot more gigs with audiences who appreciate that sound (or at least promoters who understand the need for a good soundsystem which complements the music) than most non producing djs

Its not difficult to get away with playing a lot of deep tunes in a set if you mix things up, best to plan your mix though
as tune selection and mixing between styles can be more challenging than mixing tunes of the same kind so its important to keymatch where possible. I think if you like a tune but your not sure if its right for the dancefloor try to find a way to mix it that keeps it sounding lively or if you have the skills do a remix of it.

A nice set in that situation can start deep and progress.

You can absolutely get away with playing deep music in clubs. Just play what you feel. I only ever play music I like - I would never play a tune I don't rate simply because it moves the dance. Your the DJ, it's your job to put together what you personally feel is the best music.

As has already been said, don't worry if people aren't going nuts. Way too much emphasis is placed on having a room full of 17 year olds leaping all over each other - lot's of people still go to clubs to listen to tunes, chill etc. You don't have to have people going 100% mental all the time - Dubstep and DnB are the only scenes that put so much stock on this.

I just play what I like, granted - if the crowd is wanting something more dancey I'll play something a bit more upbeat and if they're all standing still tired from the last dj - i'll play medi ... I only about 3 tear out tunes though, so....

please explain this - because, tbh - the techno-approach of djing is for my taste the best one. you can, as a listener, totally dive into the sound and the dj just takes you from one chune to the next with long fades from one to the other... as long as it fits together of course...

You can definitely still get away with playing deep tunes (of any genre), just get creative with the mixing and don't be afraid to jump around genre wise.
Try mixing in some choice house and techno cuts with a dubstep track and mix it in key.

Also checkout deep sets in other genres if you get a chance; might kick start some fresh ideas.
