I nabbed some wicked subway sounds with a guy playing one of those two stringed Chinese instruments in the middle of rush hour on my iphone.Mushroom Buttons wrote:So, anyone recorded any low budget claps? Care to share?
I'll share it out later.

Re: ESKMO snares thread - Inexpensiv field recorder suggesti
got a lil too close to the road with my mic stand and mic setup the other day doing some field recording outside a busy tunnel

capsule is still good, just the windscreen and housing is a bit for a funny shape now and some chipped paint
thankfully it's a cheaper mic
so people just to let you know the st-51 can withstand a car running it over

Gotta remember that the enclosure around the capsule is an acoustic space, its resonance affects the mic's frequency response.
That is awesome btw. I don't care how cheap a mic is, every mic is like a baby to me. Your baby got run over!

my 2 cents
1. freesound.org is your friend for found sound
2. M-audio handheld recorders are nice, i'll check out the H1's that everyone's recommending
3. try putting different materials that rattle (jewelry, nails, etc) into a wooden box with an open top. shake it around so u get the sound of the rattling combined with the impact of the materials on the wood.
crazy snare sounds are where its at

I love doing this. You've just gotta be careful how you mic it thoughstep correct wrote:try splashing water against stuff... a little tip I got from a pro

Oddly, the sounds that they make when you throw water on them are similar.

one thing i tried that worked quite well was dropping a set of keys onto my wooden table, onto an empty beer can etc.. gave out quite a crunchy sound once eq/fx
Soundcloud latest wip
Re: ESKMO snares thread - Inexpensiv field recorder suggesti
i was about to make a thread asking about eskmo percussion, but i found this gem.
thanks for all the great ideas guys! i immediately knew that it was just a lot of layers, equing, some fx, and a hell of a lot of little off the grid hits packed together, but i wasn't sure how to go about it. super excited for when i'm out of school and can mess with all this.
i wondering, as well, what other percussion techniques you guys have heard with this style though? it seems to me like most of eskmo's tunes just have a ton of samples going on that all sound ridiculously organic. his actual drums though seem to just be the kick and a crash/ride on every beat.

Re: ESKMO snares thread - Inexpensiv field recorder suggesti
Soundcloud - been working on this lately, started off as an experiment, was trying to recreate the pads in glowstream when it goes to that breakdown and they all sorta slide down, did it, then did my own thing with them, and tried working without relying so much on quantize and tried to create a basic 'call and response' thing that wasn't cheesy. Snares sound pretty close to eskmo style snares imo. Bit too loud probs, but this is just a wip i threw up last night.
Just thought I'd post it here, figured people who'd been involved with this thread might be interested.

Re: ESKMO snares thread - Inexpensiv field recorder suggesti
i found that h1 catches a lot of stuff all around, like from the back of it too. If you`re not recording ambience its best to lower the input level and get as close to the sound source as you can. Still, ease of use and price make it a best buy for field recording on the budget.
Re: ESKMO snares thread - Inexpensiv field recorder suggesti
isnt there h4 so far ?
Re: ESKMO snares thread - Inexpensiv field recorder suggesti

would you be able to give some insight into how you created those snares? it sounds like there's a lot of snaps and pops which slowly lead into the massive combined clap. are any of those claps reversed? i'm only having very limited success with this style.
