We've gone over this in about 200 threads on this forum. Europeans can't related to hood life... they grasp to NYC rap because even in their projects NYC is still a part of NYC and the connection to outside culture is there. The projects in the south are miles and miles (figuratively) away from the cities they're attatched to. There are people in the south who live their entire lives without leaving a 20 block radius. Their cultures are profoundly unique and there is absolutely nothing in western europe that people can relate to it.

You guys are too fixated on choppy 'intelligent' rappers and its why your MC's sound so forumlaic. Punchline rapping doesn't go well in the US because it's about as fraudulent and rehersed as can be. Your idea of freestyling is just a rapper using 'ammunition' they have memorized.

Anywho, you like what you can relate to. Western Europe is much like north eastern US/east coast life and why you guys seem to gravitate to that sound

I think the difference in culture has to do with what you're doing when listening to your music.

Are you gonna fix up your cars system, burn one, and go cruising while listening to MF-Doom? No that's i-pod music. You gonna turn down the bass so you can hear nas's lyrical whimsings clearer? Better line the car with some tweeters!

It's a different culture. When its 105 degrees for 2 months straight and you want to go driving around so you can get something resembeling air conditioning, you arent gonna throw in something lyrically driven.

I don't know how to explain it. It's just different in the south. We aren't riding on subways listening to mobb deep hyping ourselves up for the battle rap with b-rabbit at the club tonight.

I'm saying hip hop more than any other music relates to regional dialect and has vocal representation of where you're from.

It doesn't make sense for people in the UK to dig hearing about elbows, swangers, purp, mellow yellow when they have none of that in their culture. Fuck it took most of the US a decade plus to figure out purple wasn't referring to a color. don't expect someone in france to be shouting "I'm in that south dallas, i'm in that oak cliff, I'm in that funkytown chillin in that stop six".

Already, boy, girl, caps, hooded, all that shit means different in the south than what it does in the same country let alone thousands of miles a way.

I guess it's like listening to music in your own language.
