The proper time to flange

Post by bubblypatrick » Wed Jan 19, 2011 5:29 pm

Sigh, I don't know what it is but it just sounds so disgusting to me, not to mention it sticks out like a sore thumb. So far the only time I've found it to be used in a decent way is when resampling by slapping a lite dose of it on the mid or high bands.
When do you guys flange?
Should've chosen a manlier name

Only subtle if ever, don't really see a time where it would be needed tbh.

I use various flangers all the time--use a low rate and medium depth.

I love the K-research phaser-- can put an edge on things the way no EQ/exciter does. the key is to not make it sound like it's being flanged.

The proper time to use a flanger is all the time.

And on pads and hats.
My name is Dom and I like making ambientish music and drinking tea. Nice to meet you.

Flanger's sound great on organs, rhodes, and pads. In particular gives organs and rhodes a really nice wah wah sound, more like a phaser pedal really but the flanger will go faster and sound less messy than a phaser will. Makes those sounds sound sooo lush!

I've heard flange used really nicely on downward pitch bends on a bassline, but it's probably the only spot (or twice) in a track you'll actually hear it - and it changes the sound enough, and at the right moment to really give it some extra flavour.

It's a hard tool to master imo - I still have not been able to use it to my liking, but that's not to say it can't be used well. I'm just a newb :P

i almost always use flangers on leads and pads, lightly as mentioned. give the sound variety and character and stereo depth. use in combination with light chorus or phaser amplifies these qualities even more.

Why not use a phaser instead?

I hate flanged hats. So many tunes you can almost hear the producer using the Moving Distortion preset :bang:
