sweep/pad EQ effect (use auto filter?)

Post by edzillion » Thu Jan 20, 2011 12:45 am

(note: I am using live 8)
I'm making an edit of a old soul/disco tune, mashing it up a bit (it's too short for dancefloor) and the original has a really nice long strings sweep/pad sound just before the beat comes in - I wanted to spice it up a bit so I have put some FX on it: Auto Pan > Auto Filter > Chorus.

First off, should the chorus be before or after the filter?
Second, I am having trouble with the filter - I want to get the effect when a large long sound is squished into a very small, trebly sound and then comes back to the full spectrum just at the end of the sweep (to get maximum effect) - I am using an auto filter atm and I am not sure if that is the best approach. I have tried using EQ3 and EQ8 and automating the EQ which sounds like it should work but I am having trouble automating it to sound right. Maybe I just need to give it a few goes manually and then edit the automation on the time line but is there an easier way to do it?

cheers

Depends on the effect you want. Experiment and see.

Ableton's autofilter imo sucks balls. You're better off using an EQ plugin and automating the frequencies at which the EQ applies. Gives you a lot more control, and you can make the sound as thin or full as you want.

up to you if you want chorus before or after the filter. To get the effect your after use a high pass filter, start with it at a high frequency and automate the cut off down until its passing the full frequency range.

Yeah, best way to do this is automating the hi band- The automation line should be pretty much a diagonal line but you might want to have it taper off slightly with a curve.

EDIT; I mean the LOW band, haha.. i'm sure you know anyway
