Yeah, it works the other way round, but people seem to think listening to such music makes you...'one of them'.

Saw a class hip fellow today at trainstation. Rim glasses, lumberjack shirt, short sides & long top, hideous moustache, plimsoles & blue chordes.
If I didn't know what a hipster was, I'd think he was a homosexual German. Doesn't sound like it from the description, but he really wasn't pulling the look off.

you could make a case that in the same way that the "dominant culture" appropriated parts of african-american or caribbean culture as their own (blues/r'n'b/rock and hip hop are just the more obvious examples, as are the skinhead and mod subcultures), "hipsters" are just a similar phenomenon where the "dominant culture" has appropriated parts of gay culture as their own.
