Get yourself an 808 kick drum sample.
Add plenty of distortion.
Detune to suit and wack some filtering on it.

I would allow any distortion if u want pure subby sub.

Just use a sine wave or an 808 kick sample. Clean and simple.

yeh, distortion on the sub kills the depth.
it can sound quite fat still when used subtly... (n tends to sound more upfront if the system aint quite up to scratch)

when you apply the lowpass filter, you will filtering out alot of the grainyness of the distortion
