Post by resik21 » Fri Jan 21, 2011 5:41 pm

hey guys, I just started producing about two weeks ago when I came across FL studio. I've been listening / mixing dubstep for quite some time now and wanted to see what I could make, if anything.
I've made a couple sample tracks that I only messed around with for a couple hours at a time, this is the first track I actually spent some time on and was hoping to get some opinions on it. Keep in mind I've only used FL for less then 2 weeks and haven't had any other experience with music production
criticism appreciated :D:
the track just randomly ends because I couldn't figure out how I wanted to make the last drop
http://soundcloud.com/yoshimitsu-lll/ai ... nothin-new

also! First post, nice to meet you guys :e:

*edit* forgot to give some feedback
@sqwuabble, I'm really liking that so far. I know I've heard that "AWW" sample somewhere before can't put my finger on it though
@nnny, loving dreamscape so far. Such a chilled out vibe to it, I'd love to hear it when its finished
@nonXero You can't go wrong with that sound, chilled out banger right there

@resik21: not a huge fan of vocal samples, but thats just my taste. sub seems a little too loud on my end, but the bottom end of your kicks isn't coming through at all (might be my setup dont have the best equipment). melody and chord wise you track is awesome. you might wanna think about making a different beat for the intro though. also your shakers might be a little too loud. feels like there's always a lot of different things going on at the same time, maybe too much? -q-
@ sqwuabblesmynig: to be honest, not feeling the vibe of your tune. sorry mate :? hihats in the beginning are really nice. everythings fine in the intro. not a fan of those vocal samples they sound kinda random and dont really fit. those delayed chords in the background make for a nice dubby feeling. but your lead synth just sounds weird. way to high for my taste. but on the other hand i dont like those in general. reminds me of chirping birds in the garden or something.
@nnny: man you've got some awesome pads going there but i'm not a big fan of those claps. sounds somewhat generic, does not really fit into the mix if you know what i mean. lot of top end in your kicks dont know if i like that or not. i realize you dont want the most hard hitting kicks but maybe a little more midbass maybe? all in all: :e:

alright here we go again: I actually tried to imitate the talking wobbles in this one but I ended up with... something else... just realized that my fx-chain is creating some sort of beeping noise, havent figured out how to stop it yet, suggestions?

all good mang, thanks for your input, i also am not feeling that synth that you said was like birds. someone had called it dubstep cricket so i just figured F*** it stick with it, but i also turned the sat. down this wip, so i will def mess with that a bit. also the samples havent been eqd yet so that might be why they seem like they dont fit. thanks for the listen. cheers!

thanks for the input :D:
I lowered the sub and took out a lot a bunch of the doubled hats to make it sound cleaner
Haha and trust me I'm not a big fan of those vocals either, I just wanted to see if I could build a song around a sample and I think it's coming out pretty nice so far. I'm still learning though, I haven't messed around with half the stuff in my DAW

but ups on your talking wobble track, loving the dark atmosphere :e:

s3f - that is sounding really mean so far. Good wobs. Slow down the panning rate imo, or w.e is making it move back n forth. Otherwise, Just gotta freshen up the kick and snare.

resik21 - thats a good first tune dude. With a little composition work you got more than enough to lay out a sick chill dub track. Keep on practicing and read the bible everyday. The part that drops around 1:50... If you put that earlier, around the 0:53 mark (put in a small break for the drums before the drop to allow for a better build up) you will have a good skeleton to work with. I would work on that bell sound in that part though. Less detune and drop it down a few dbs. Post back.

I took the advice people gave me and made some changes to my track. Check siggy. ty.

In my opinion mate i would eq and compress your snare a bit and add a bit more hi end hats and maybe bongos, your synth is soundin really nice tho keep it up.
How long have you been producing for?

s3f- I really like where you are going with this, a real head nodder (ooh that sounds dumb sry) a little more work and it will be a beast. a few things is the the hi hat (I think) that creeps up later either seems unbalanced or it doesn't fit.

resik21- I don't want to be an asshat but I'm not exactly feeling this tune. I do feel like it has potential, keep working and you will have a nice chill tune man.

nnny- you don't need feedback just to make more awesome tunes haha

antman- this is the thread for that xD def work on your levels the snare hurt my ears lol. maybe add a melody up top, I like your sound in general though just keep at it.

boo131- nice track has a dnb feel to it lol the only major thing is to work on the levels (I dont know the proper term for this)

here is a complete re work of my track I posted before called baby hippo
I added a intro worked the levels and an outro I just seem to be struggling with a melody up top or do you guys think its needed?

@coreygoesrawr Thanks so much for the feedback! The track you posted is raw as hell and I feel like you dont need much of a melody for it because the wobbles in your track carry the melody... well atleast to me.

Aww shucks

Cheers bro. That track, its nice. Fucking feeling it, dark as hell. Intro is just my thing! Little vocal samples are nice. Give tutorial for that bass? PLEASE :)
It be nice with a little something behind the bass for added atmosphere, but there dosnt really need any more melody. Bass carries it
