[London] West - East - North - South

Post by 2000f » Sun Jan 23, 2011 3:45 pm

Hi,

as some of you might know, I'm currently finishing my master's thesis in the phenomenon of London pirate radio. For this I hope you can help me once more.
I'm arguing that the recent underground London genres of grime and dubstep, to some extent, can be seen as originating in specific areas, e.g. parts of the East End and South London respectively. Yet, as the genres have evolved, new sub-genres are created, and new areas of London spawn these. An example of this could be the more 'jazzy'/'soulful' vibes of parts of West London, characterised by artists such as Quest, Heny.G, Purple, Silkie, Jazzy Jazzy, Jay 5ive, etc. (i.e. the Antisocial Entertainment camp), however, are there other sub-genres of grime and dubstep that seem to originate in other parts of London too? Is the North represented, or other areas? If so, which genres/artists?
Finally, the uk funky (and dubbage) sounds, as championed especially on Rinse, does it stem from a certain London area, such as grime and dubstep did in the early years?
