Re: friend of mine just posted this on facebook
this isn't being done for entertainment and any violence would only make things worse. A protester has already been killed, nothing would be worse then escalating violence, especially as the army appear to be siding with state police and not the demonstrating masses. Scary stuff, Egypt is really at a crossroads right now.vulvavibration wrote:gunfire!
I was speaking to an Iranian friend today who was telling me that Egypt is essentially the entertainment hub of the middle east. Not sure what this really means but the country is pretty influential in regards to it's neighbours, could be a fairly cataclysmic domino effect if the NDP are successfully toppled...
Re: friend of mine just posted this on facebook
it is indeed. next to lebanon which is musically the other significant entertainment hub.lloydnoise wrote:this isn't being done for entertainment and any violence would only make things worse. So these are just riots against the oppressive/ corrupt regimes are they? There is no move towards fanatical islamic and that amongst the rioters? Not accusing, just curious?
Re: the situation in egypt
no! it's coming from the liberal open minded middle class.. a lot of students too.hutyluty wrote:So these are just riots against the oppressive/ corrupt regimes are they? There is no move towards fanatical islamic and that amongst the rioters? Not accusing, just curious?
the muslim brotherhood, a party in egypt which is more on the extreme islamistic side has not been involved at all which suprises me.

Re: the situation in egypt
Is it possible to hope that the people of Egypt could overthrow their repressive government, and transition into a true open and peaceful democracy?
This easily could be an out of the frying pan, into the fire kind of situation. Yeah, the muslim brotherhood is not motivating this, but I am certain they would attempt to control the subsequent government.
Also, is this not another offshoot of the global economic collapse, rather than a pure political movement?
I'm just going to hope that things get better for the people, and that people in other nations see this and take action to oust their repressive leaders. Still nagging fear though, I don't know if the people are ready to accept the reality of the global economic situation.

And I may be stating the obvious, but you can be damn sure that the moment this looks like it's going to significantly affect American interests, America will throw resources at it.64hz wrote:lol @ the west trying to pretend that theyre not affected by their lackeys falling one by one.
For instance: the Prime Minister of Jordan is a well-known asset of Anglo-American intelligence. Some of the instigators of the protests there? Islamists who - among other things - accuse him of supporting Western policies towards Israel, and not being righteous enough. The real problem is more likely economic, but the stigma of being profane is more effective than calling someone a bad accountant.
The situation in Egypt too seems like it might be economic at its core; regardless, the ensuing vacuum if/when Mubarak is forced out of office will be when all the players step up their game and make a grab for power. The non-urban people from the countryside in Egypt (called Saidi) are legendary in the middle East for their sheer stubbornness, so ultimately I think whoever they side with will be the force to be reckoned with. They're hungry for representation now more than ever.
I'd like to dedicate this song to the Egyptian people, by the greatest female voice in Arabic music... and an Egyptian. Hang in there guys.

yeah, can't believe this thread hasn't gone nuts already, especially with the pulling the plug on the internet and all. Mobile phone networks were temporarily shut down as well weren't they? Scary that a govt would do that.

Take notes on the likely totalitarian control tactics in an online world.

Army might have to take over. Cairo is a dense, populous city.
