help

Post by rudeski damager » Wed Apr 11, 2007 5:36 pm

I have fruity

I made a few beats here n there

They're all shit

all of my friends are going on stush and airing my q's on msn

anyone with some experience got some time on their hands to answer my questions?

Basically "point me in the right direction" etc.. Because although I'm trying to make dubstep tunes, none of them sound like dubstep. they all sound like.. don't know... just terrible music.

If you are the good samaritan that I'm looking for then add me:
pimpingaintez@hotmail.com

infact any tips at all are helpful. somewhere to start..
Might see me goin on safe and pally

Post some of your beats. If we can't hear what you have so far, we can't tell you how to improve them.

well i would say 'u either got it or u aint' but thats kind of gay lol

i personally start out by either 1. writing a melody and working around that adding everything after or 2. start out by laying down drums.

in regards to drum programming i basically just make something which sounds good to my ear, something rythmically exciting, throw in bongos, shakers, snares, rimshots, but its important to get a good groove! i then add the bass in, i usually add the bass hits with the kick drum, with the melody over after with next sounds. its important to make the bass and drums work together to get the best groove...

overall its a bit of an organic process which cant really be explained, but if u got any musical talent music production should be fun and ur production will easily progress! enjoy :D

haha liking the minimal approach with no drums and that, i might even try that myself, just do bass and thats it... but that orchestra hit is getting rinsed out too much in the tune...

well here goes..

1. learn how to make basslines. If you can't make melodies with you bass, you'll have to resort to clever programming. get a synth that allows to reroute LFO's to your filter cutoff and start playing with it.

2. Drums are the most important part. If they sound crap, the rest of your song will collapse unless you are a good arranger who can replace the drums with other elements like bass-stabs, moving pads and other musical hits.

3. The song you posted has some good elements (that orchestral hit for one), but they all get repeated too much.

4. Try to develop a feel for tension. A track has to build up, DROP, break and buildup again. I noticed you tried that in the beginning by keeping that high tone going on.

The fastest way to good tunes is first by mimicking very closely a track you really dig. Take that track, put it in your sequencer and try to rebuild it as closely possible. In the process, you'll find out loads about making music.
