I find music production similar to domestic violence. There's really no rhyme or reason, you just throw that bitch wherever you feel like at the moment.

that i procrastinate like balls at times :santasmurf:

(such as now, being that i have a rmx due tomorrow and am just now getting around to sorting out the stems)

In truth, a good producer has solid ideas to start with, the wherewithal to create & revise them, and the ability to see where the value lies in an idea-- is it big enough to be the center of a song, a part, a transitional idea, or something that's not currently strong enough to develop by itself.

but back to my 1st point--a good producer PRODUCES, first and foremost. Kind of the opposite of James Joyce's "A portrait of the artist as a young man"... just saying you're a producer doesn't make you one.

It's all down to having an open mind and being creative. ( I know it's not helpful saying you need to be creative, complete pain in the arse.)
Also having a lot of patience, because it's going to take quite a while to achieve a good mix down and to make it sound how you think it should.

When your new, it will always sound how you think it will sound.
It's about making it sound how it's supposed to.

pretty much this... a good producer doesn't wonder what magical secret will turn a frog into a perpetually rewound prince of dubs....
they just get on with their shit and do their thing.

i've been a musician for a long, long time... and i can tell you that probably the best producers i know don't have much to show for it - maybe a few ignored albums here and there, and that is about it. they are hidden gems, but what is even more remarkable is that they still rework and refine their craft. they know what they are trying to achieve and they will bloody their fingers to the bone till they reach it. it is people like them that 50-100 years from now, once the dust has settled from stupid fads and shit whose music will rise from the ether and truly stand out.

I get what you mean. But in music, when has this ever actually happened?

Ummm... all the time?

A perfect example is JS Bach. In his day he was known as a brilliant "intellectual" musician, but no one really gave a shit about him as a true musician - and, if to rub salt in the wound, 2 of his sons, JC Bach & CPE Bach were better known composers in their day. And it was only through their (and other's) tireless championing of JS Bach's works after his death that he started to get the respect he deserved.

In fact - many composers didn't make their money from composing - but rather from teaching or being a church organist/choirmaster or whatever. In their day there were just as many hacks as there are today who were full of shit. Probably most weren't successful in their day, but some were... and why don't you know much of them? Because their music hasn't survived for the long haul. Lasting tastes change - when Stravinsky's Rite of Spring was debuted, it actually caused a riot people hated it that much... now it is held up as one of the most remarkable compositions in history.

I know I have been using much older examples, but it is hard to see modern music rise from the ashes - because rock and pop and electronic music hasn't been around for 100 years... so we still have yet to see what will surface.

Mozart, and bach just to name a few. Start listening to radio 3.

In a 100 years from now, I think people will still be listening to Aphex twin, maybe Flying lotus even though I think he still real needs to prove him self. So far he has show his music could live on, but not that it will imo. Im not sure who will be remeber for dubstep, maybe loefah, or skream...

Mozart and Bach were already accomplished musicians, on a global scale, when they were alive. Dubstep is a predominantley underground genre, deep in particular, I doubt that any dubstep producers will be ranked as highly as Mozart or Bach in 100 years time.

Mozart was well-known and revered throughout Europe in his lifetime (which is why I didn't use him as an example), but Bach was not. Bach was respected academically for his fugues and such, but it was mostly dismissed as technical exercises rather than divine music. Both his sons CPE & JC were better respected as composers in their day - yet I bet no one on this board could name (let along hum) any of their tunes off the top of their heads.

Don't really think dubstep is underground any more, but also don't see what modern day success has to do with music living on. If you was to think like that then you would think that justin bieber is the future of classical music.
