Legend4ry's exciting wobbles on FL tutorial.

Post by legend4ry » Wed Feb 09, 2011 12:28 am

Applying the lfo to the cut off filter and letting it boringly run at sync'd rates is a thing of the past (well it should be).

If you're looking for new ways to get exciting wobbles (or infact, any sound which uses automation) you can do it with this simple tutorial!

I am using WASP for this but you can use any synth you like the idea is the same.

STEP ONE:

Load preset shapes: You can find these in Channel Presets > Automation Clips > Shapes.

Image

STEP TWO:

Link your FILTER to the shape.

STEP THREE:

Use your shape to control the sound.

Bend and twist your shape to how you see fit...

HERES MY TOP TIP!

If you're like me and like things to be in sections for easy cut and pasting and such, then make sure you MAKE A NEW SHAPE BY MAKING THE ORIGINAL SHAPE UNIQUE, then editing the new one.. If you don't do this it won't work !

Then you can have lots of crazy made shapes, with an easy way to find them.. As you can rename them or even save the ones you REALLY like for future projects!.

If you followed the steps properly then it should.

Make sure the shape is attached to the filter cut off properly. (You can do so by checking the parameters of the automation clip).

It must also be said you have to put a note in a patten and place it in the sequencer..
thought that was kinda self explanatory by the last picture though?

Maybe the cutoff is too low? wait for it to build/rise?

I will give this a go. I never do any of it this way and just do it the normal quick way!

Always nice to try out different ways of doing it. You should think about adding some audio examples :D
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Am I right in thinking you could do the same thing by just right clicking the cutoff and 'create automation clip' ??? I cant check this just now im not at home.

You can but this gives you shapes to start with, making you think about your twists and bends more intelligently/logically.

If you just randomly start clicking you may get some good results but this way I find its a lot cleaner and easier to get a good sound.

Cool I wasnt dissing this way I never think to use shapes so ill have a look. I was gonna suggest something Ive done before thats similar. I put a parametric EQ2 on the bass mixer track then selected the preset that cuts extreme high and lows. Then you automate the high frequency range point by right click then 'create automation clip' to make it sweep left and right across the spectrum. It gives a lfo to cutoff effect but sounds a little different. You can also get creative by cutting out notches and automating them to pulse in and out. Anything really. Apologies for the gibberish im high as a kite right now :cornlol:

same here, just with reaper
i'm tired of having 5+ instances of massive or other synths for the single filtershapes

I'm sure you guys could sit there and draw the filter shapes yourself, thats bare long though thats why I found an alternative haha.

meh... it really seems like a time and cpu-saver, but i don't wanna switch DAW's just for that. well maybe i can suggest the idea to the folks at reaper, basically i'd love a way to have the option to add subchannels to a channel with a VSTi loaded, with each of the subchannels being able to have differently tweaked settings for that VSTi. kinda like frozen automation, just faster.
i doubt that stuff is possible though...

Doesn't Reaper allow you to save automation lanes? You could map out a simple 1-0 sine, saw, square, tri and import them where needed?

Yeah you would just use the automation lanes for this.
