What do i need to work on?

Post by misk » Fri Apr 13, 2007 3:10 pm

I've been making a lot of tunes lately. Im having fun, but im feeling kinda stagnant. I feel like there are things i need to work on to make my tunes better, and im not sure what those are.

if anyone would be willing to listen to my tunes and give me some feedback regarding my general production (not tune specific) then i would really appreciate it.

also, i thought it would be cool to do a weekly 'producer intensive' where we pick a forum producer, and pick apart their style/work here on the production forum. obviously this would only be for producers who agree to let this happen :)

so, I'll put my money where my mouth is and get this going. take me apart, so that i may learn! and anyone else who wants to do this, PM me!

tunes are on my virb site (in sig too)

peace!

ez man,
thats what the production forum should all be about init,
Your tunes are sounding heavy, tbh im listening on my laptop..so its going to be hard to make too much criticism. I couldn't tell you anything in specific that you should be working on improving in your tunes. Sounds like you got your structures right and mixdowns sound good. I also like your atmos' throughout your tracks. You seemed to use a suck snr before the kik in a couple of tracks, also.sounds good. And that crunchy bass that you use also sounds phat..
i know what you mean about feeling kinda stagnant, i get the same., we prolly all do,
I would say the best advise is to just keep drilling away, you said that your having fun, and if your anything like me, you learn new tricks each time you work on a new tune, and for me my production seems to sound tighter each tune. So as long as your having fun and producing, your learning new stuff and im sure your productions improving..
Not sure if this was a wasted post on my behalf , all bout the confident boosts with music init, people letting you know that they like your shit. Brain leech and sahra (maybe the sub cud be a bit more prominent in this track,i'm guessing you left it unfinished with the fadeout) are my favorite tracks u got going on. good stuff.

My productions far from perfect, so Misk, or anyone else your welcome to 'tear' apart my tracks with criticism..

Big up!

no, that was a great post man! i really appreciate it. and also, regardless of the state of your productions, i like the criticism. there was a DJ recently, who told me my kicks and subs needed a little work, and then i went home and made Brain Leech. not that its amazing, but i feel its a step in the right direction!

Octavenoize, you've illustrated my point - the people who want criticism about their productions, and thier style, WANT it, and they wont be offended when you state something that needs improvement regarding their tunes/style. Especially if what you say happens to be that one thing they needed to hear, that they could learn from.

i agree, this is what the production forum should be about! Im gonna give this thread a little longer, and then we can do you, or anyone else who wants to, next.

Hey bro. I love the bio on your myspace.

I'm trying to listen on my break here at work, but unfortuanately it isn't letting me install flash.
I've also tried on my connection at home, but it doesn't work via dialup.

Sorry - I'll do my best to check again soon, or if you can post a 96kbps or 128kbps version on mediafire.com or something then I can listen on my reference monitors.

Great discussion here.

I totally feel the same way - that my production is a little tighter each tune. I got a bit addicted to compression for a while. It's like yayo - it makes everything so intense and in your face, you just want to keep squeezing, but you wake up the next day and realize that you went way off the deep end. lol.

Here is to community vibes in the production forum. cheers!

Yeah man. I've been at er for 9... Still never had a release.
But I mean, 9 years ago you couldn't use compression in software. Hell, I was only 14 for gods sake! Compression was a little beyond me and the trackers I was using. But, slowly but surely, we all learn. We listen to the advice of others, and apply bits of it, and we're that much closer to making sounds that make us smile. And if we can teach something, then that is great, cause it shares with others, and makes us solidify our own understanding.

I find I get really desensized and it gets harder to make myself smile in the studio. When I was 15 I could make crap and I'd be totally excited about it. Now I make a good tune and it gets played on the radio, and in the clubs the world over and I'm barely moved. A release on vinyl might make me jump up and down though! :-)

all i know is i make tunes to make myself happy
like atm i have 0 motivation so i'm not making shit unlike people who churn out generic tunes in downtimes

Think there's a lot to be said for 0 motivation sometimes. Seems to make far more sense to go at the production when you get inspiration than just chugging away with shit that's going nowhere, that you hope you'll find that certain something to finish it. Got far too many of these sitting around - really need to get ruthless and start culling them.

I think they're a bit like "friends" that you meet up with regularly, have fuck all in common with, nothing to talk about, vaguely irritated by their very existence yet not enough to be unpleasant to. Find tunes and people that inspire you and don't waste your short time on this planet thinking that things will improve if you just wait long enough.
Hmm....

you know this is a wicked idea!

alright for what it's worth here's what I thought of ur stuff....

shuggoth really stuck out for me... boxcutter beautiful but much more simple and to the point... i don't know whether u did this before or after that dj gave u the advice but i would like to hear a mix with stronger kick and snare.... i'm thinking along the lines of distance - temptation as a reference, it's got a similar vibe. i'm gonna be back on your virb a fair few times to listen to this one!

brain leech also sticks out as a gd'un ...the bass work is niceness! and the drums sound stronger which is a good thing. big tune!

not mad keen on that harsh lead thing on sweet revenge (hope you know which one i mean), altho you've got drum programming and atmos nailed..

sahara has a very very nice vibe, i wouldnt be surprised to hear it in a pinch mix, bass is heavy, all the sounds work nice together, but for me, it's a little too busy. i'd cut some space into it, make that oriental lead thing more sparse, do a little of the same to the drums...but maybe that's remix territory

anyway, i was very impressed with your sound, i've been curious to hear ur tunes since i saw a couple in a forensics mix, and i wasnt dissapointed! you've consistently got good atmos, good percussion and bass patterns, and i can hear an original sound ready to hatch with some more work, which is the most important thing!

and let me know when ur happy that everyone's said their bit, if no-one's pm'd u i want next week :)
