building a sound system.. becoming a dj
any advice you can give me on what kinds of speakers/amps/ect i need to put together a killer sound system? also aside from serato what else i need to mix the music on my computer into sets for live shows? im honestly shit at production, im still trying but its all way too novice to publish.
Re: building a sound system.. becoming a dj
In terms of dj-ing stuff there are a bunch of ways to go, vinyl, cd's, laptop, which do you wanna do?
What is your soundsystem for? Parties, hire outs, producing or just mixing?
And how much money have you got?
You need to be a bit more specific if you wan't a decent answer.

Niiiice, funktion 1 looks like some dopesoap looks like a good place to start my research thank you.

Laptop no doubt about it, I have way better music on mine than the "dubstep djs" I have seen locally. In my opinion at least hehe

Parties at mid to large sized venues.
And how much money have you got?
At the moment $800 but that's only my first month at this new job and they took some out for uniform.. Point is my stash is expanding and I'm down to invest whatever to make it happen.

Re: building a sound system.. becoming a dj
I'd go for a reflex-type of speaker. Those are the type of speakers you'll normally find in a dance club. The reason is that these are fairly easy to build (no weird angles etc.) and different musicgenres will work on them, so you can use them for dubstep, techno, whatever.
The thing you might want to consider is getting them built by a professional builder or at least get some help or advice from someone who knows something about it because there are always little details that you would not normally think of that these guys do.
Gsubs are pretty good. I'd make a pair in your case. On top of that maybe 4 "x12" cabs with 2 12" speakers and a 1" comp.
For a good sound you have to have quality stuff. Good amps, good cables, good wood, good drivers, good crossovers, eq's,...
There are good websites that'll help you a bunch: speakerplans, freespeakerplans,... there are a few others but I can't remember them.
This type of system isn't an original "soundsystem" used in dub dances. It's more like a PA. Soundsystems usually only work with dub and reggae anyway.
Gilles
btw when I started making my own stuff I never would've thought what moneypitt it is. Please do consider it because 800$ is peanuts in this "hobby"

I wouldn't start worrying about the soundsystem until you have got the djing gear which will probably be more than 800 bucks anyway.
My one piece of advice is Don't buy cheap speakers! they will sound shit and you will only end up selling them later.
Spend a bit more money and get something worthwhile that you can keep.
Good luck...

if you want it to be killer it definitely has to have bombs. maybe some c4 will do.
tape one of these on the speaker and the fans will be dying for your sound in no time.
