How do people like commercial music?

Post by Sheff » Mon Feb 21, 2011 11:25 am

I know it sounds stubborn but does anyone else ever wonder about this? I'm not talking about commercial dubstep just commercial music in general, like all the top 40 shit. Fair enough there is some music in the charts which i occasionally like but after hearing it on the radio 15 times an hour then on every music channel at home 30 times an hour it really loses its spark.
Do you think that if people heard other genres than pop music they would like it? Or do you think its just the case that music isn't that much of a big deal in there life and they're happy with whatever the latest music is?
It fucking boggles me how people can listen to stuff like JLS and that beiber bird and actually claim they like it.

Because they have different tastes to you. It happens. If we all liked the same thing, the world would be a very boring placed indeed.

people are more different too each other than they realise

the things people want from music differ hugely from person to person

also buying power ends up defining what pop music is....people with disposable income buy more music and in my experience those people are bad -w-

I know that, but it just seems like you've heard one pop song an you've heard them all. I appreciate people have different tastes in music and like you said if we all agreed with each other the world would be a boring place.
And pistons and I've never thought of that before haha

Each to their own. It boggles me how people can love mind numbingly boring and predictable mainstream Hollywood films. Films such as Inception and Inglorious Bastards.

I like the music off that Fiat advert BTW. I know it's by Amy McDonald and I don't care, she's got an ace voice and she's purdy like your mouth.

its all about independent films surely?

Same with most 'future garage' and dancefloor dnb, really.

Most death metal from the past 10 years as well.

Got nothing to do with mainstream or non-mainstream music.

People just like different stuff for the most part and some people are just fine with a recognizable little melody on the dance floor or while they're doing chores. It's all good.

As someone who watches a lot of Hollywood movies, but finds his intelligence insulted after every viewing but still continues to watch them, I'd say they just... kill time and they keep me up to date on pop culture. o.o

The only thing I dont really get is...

You hear pop tracks on the radio on your drive to work....

You listen to pop tracks on the radio whilst at work....

You listen to pop tracks on the radio on the drive home from work....

Then you get home and stick pop tracks on your iTunes or radio at home....

Then you go out, and listen TO THE SAME pop tracks at a nightclub.

I just never got that mentatlity of listening to the same things you hear on the radio at home and in a club when you go out.

Most people like music they can relate to. Most people concentrate on lyrics and melody not texture. Most people find familiar themes and styles comforting. Most people are doing something else while they listen to music. Most people enjoy the easy emotional gratification and instant accessibility of pop music.

I reckon that just about covers it. Not that Ive done any surveys or anything.

IMO most commercial music is made for people who do not listen to music.

They like to look at the artists more than listen to them.

This is what gets me about the Dubstep and Bass music scene, when people go bananas for the cocaine powder tune for instance it's like have you not alreasy heard it a million times already?

I agree with this and would add that, imo, most people are too afraid/not bothered about listening to less popular music. Some people are sheep and some sheep know they're sheep but don't care. It's these people that have the bigger problem, imo. It's like finding yourself in the kingdom of the blind and choosing to poke your eyes out.

Surely the answer to your question is the answer to the question you have answered.
