borrowed a microKorg
i borrowed a microKorg from a friend, as he wanted me to figure out how to work it (hes a guitarist, not a producer). I gotta say, after one night of messing with it, it has to be the most limited preset synth i've ever worked with. the only cool thing about it is that it can run on batteries...
yeah man, unless im missing something, i find it to be ridiculously difficult to program, and rather boring. if i had the money for a microKorg, i'd probably just save a couple hundred more and get a ms2000.
ugh.

i completely and 100% disagree. it's got a great sound engine that's really quite straightforward to program... each knob is assignable, the 2 to the left of the matrix control which parameter you're editing, the 4 above control the parameters. you've got 4 slots to assign lfo controls... you can have the mod wheel control the lfo speed and lfo 2 control the depth of the filter all setup in about 10 seconds.
the presets are... presets. you shouldn't be using 'em! take a preset as a starting point and move on from there.
otherwise it sync's w/ logic AND my mpc flawlessly and has really, really wonderful sub tones in it. the longer i own it (i've had mine for about 5 months), the less soft synths i use.

That's more the type of response I'm used to hearing about it.TeReKeTe wrote:i completely and 100% disagree. it's got a great sound engine that's really quite straightforward to program... each knob is assignable, the 2 to the left of the matrix control which parameter you're editing, the 4 above control the parameters. you've got 4 slots to assign lfo controls... you can have the mod wheel control the lfo speed and lfo 2 control the depth of the filter all setup in about 10 seconds.

i like my synths to be more straightforward. I feel that this synth is not very straightforward. Its really a matter of opinion, but i own the electribe mx, and the sx. both of which are MUCH more straightforward than the microKorg. really the synth in the microKorg is almost identical to the synth in the EMX-1, with the exception of polyphony. seeing as how i use my emx for basses primarily, this is not a problem for me.
im still going to mess with it some more, but as far as i can currently tell, the microkorg's interface is a bit unrefined. I dont like assignable knobs, personally, it just seems counter-intuitive to me.

Really? Assignable knobs means flexibility. *Drools* Pretty much all the softsynths I get into are a bit more modular now anyways. I prefer the style myself, as I don't mind spending a good lot of time developing a sound.Misk wrote:i like my synths to be more straightforward. I feel that this synth is not very straightforward. Cool well thanks for everyones input here. I've been looking at the microKorg for a while. It's good to hear someones perspective that doesn't care for it as well, as I know the issues that some people have with it now.

my only wish is that it was multi-timbral... but, w/ that said, once you get a part set and you record it, it's on to the next sound, so in a way... it just keeps you trudgin' along.

I actually didn't know it was monophonic. I'm sure I would just use it for basses anyways. The thing sounds knarly.TeReKeTe wrote:my only wish is that it was multi-timbral... but, w/ that said, once you get a part set and you record it, it's on to the next sound, so in a way... it just keeps you trudgin' along.
I wish there was a rackmount version or something tho.

multitimbral and monophonic aint the same thing btw.decklyn wrote:I actually didn't know it was monophonic. I'm sure I would just use it for basses anyways. monophonic means you can only play one note at a time.
multitimbral means you can have multiple sounds at the same time, triggered on different midi channels iirc. for e.g you can select a pad, bass, and fx patch and trigger them all simultaneously.
the microkorg can only play one (maybe two im not sure) patch(es) at a time but i think its polyphony is about 4 notes simulataneously.
is it?
NO.
NO.
Thankyou for that! you learn something new everyday!Batfink wrote:multitimbral and monophonic aint the same thing btw.decklyn wrote:I actually didn't know it was monophonic. what does "full polyphony" mean. infinite notes simulataneously?J_J wrote:yaaaaaaawnnn......

anyway you're wrong. it has 4 note polyphony. if you;re using it as a midi keyboard to play a softsynth then of course it lets you play more than 4 notes simultaneously. eedgit.
is it?
NO.
NO.
it's actually a bit more confusing than that, even, in that it has a 4-voice polyphony. if you're using a sound that uses both oscillators, then you're down to 2-note polyphony. if you're using a sound that has both oscillators running in unison, then it's monophonic. it'll transmit all the polyphonal MIDI info, though.
