FL Studio Automation help?

Post by KhemicalKid » Tue Feb 22, 2011 6:48 pm

Hey there guys.

So, I basically know FL inside and out after playing around for a few years, and am starting to produce some good sounds.. For once. I just have one problem..

When you assign an automation clip for an instrument through the router (say a phaser) You assign the instrument to a channel in the mixer, then you add your effect, and add the automation clip to the playlist. Simple.

But, I have a drum beat, which has 2 hats, 2 kicks, and 2 snares - I want to assign a cutoff filter to all of them, but want to keep them all on separate channels on the mixer (So I can add effects) How can I assign a cutoff filter to all of the instruments, but still keep them on separate mixer channels? Never figured it out..

Sorry if I'm being a bit vauge.. I'm finding this hard to word out. Please help me if you can, and if you need any more info, then please ask.

Big up! :m:

Could you add kick drum to channel 1, hi hat channel 2, snare channel 3. add fruit filters to all of three and automate each cut off. So in your playlist you will have 3 filter cutoff automations. your drum beat will be split in three patterns. meaning you need to put 3 patterns on the playlist to hear your entire drum beat.

Good point, but is there a less messy way to do it? I don't want tons of automation clips hogging my playlist, as I use it for placing my patterns too.. the part underneath ins't of any use to me..

cant you just route them all to a send channel with an LP filter, that way their all on separate channels, but you can still control all of their filter cutoff from the send...seems to me the best way to do it

khemicalkid... notice when you click on a mixer track, there will be a little yellow curved arrow on the bottom of the master mixer track slot, click it so it turns off and go to your send 1 and click the arrow on that one and turn the knob to 100% (not all the way, like 3/4 look at the hint bar in the top left to see where 100% is at, it goes to like 120% i think) do that for all your sounds you want to fx at the same time, put the filter on the send track voila

Make a bus.

Say you have the following the following mixer channels;

1 = Kick
2 = Snare
3 = Hat

Take the 4th channel on the mixer and make it a bus. Click on each individual channel, then with it selected right click on the arrow at the bottom of the 4th > Send To This Channel only. This will change the routing so that the channel only outputs through the bus.

You can then apply the filter to the bus channel, and still have individual channels with their own effects on them.

This can be taken a step further, for example;

1 = KickA
2 = KickB
3 = Kick Bus
4 = SnareA
5 = SnareB
6 = Snare Bus
7 = HatA
8 = HatB
9 = HatC
10 = Hat Bus
11 = Drums bus

Whereby the drums bus has the output from the other 3 bus' routing into it.

I had this issue in the past.

Initially I just added a filter to each track, linked the cutoff to an XY controller, and set the automation clip on X.

Now I use a send track, keeping all my hits in FPC on separate mixer tracks, then bringing them back together in the final stage for filtering automation.
I found that the benefit of this is more space on the mixer tracks of the hits.

Either of these works fine for me, always looking to make things easier :')

This, its standard procedure for every new project imo!

Template ftw.

I've got drums, snare, hats, perc, all bussed, one bus for my Slicex/FLSlicer channels, bassline splitter + bus, then a beats buss, master bus, instance of Span on each bus + the master etc etc.
