Re: How do people like commercial music?
a lot of people dont care about music
add to that the fact that a lot of people dont care about liking something different and/or independant of mainstream tastes
therefore we have a mass market of people who accept and enjoy having their tastes defined for them and actively ignore anything which is not condoned by the mainstream in any particular facet of the arts (books, films, television, music etc.)
this is herd mentality en masse
what we have at all levels throughout society is both herd mentality en masse and the naturally ingrained disposition to herd mentality which permeates even that which is supposedly independant of the mainstream
doing something completely different rarely if ever will earn plaudits from any large audience (not straight away anyway) and those who do encourage the new independant thought or action are often accused by any group of one of several things a)pretentiousness, b)being a crackpot, c)being different 'for the sake of it', and so on...
this goes all through society
look at the 'hate' for hipsters - its not just modern 'hipsters' who attract hate, but anyone who does something outside of the norm usually attracts attention and receives a plethora of abuse from literally every corner of society, or is simply ignored until notice is taken THEN abuse starts.
its something Chomsky attributes to the political and social structures we exist in and have created for ourselves, thus with political opinion it doesn't matter what your views on the system are because your views on the system are for the most part created by the system you are a part of.

Re: How do people like commercial music?
Most people simply aren't interested in music very much. They don't really care what's played as long as its catchy etc. Its only the people who consider music as a hobby or passion who bother to look for artists/bands outside the top 40/in they're favourite genre.

I'm defo hungover as fuck like. I'm not really having a pop cos I mark out to my favourite tunes, more providing context for the kid that doesn't understand how people listen to pop music all the time then listen to pop in clubs innartmikey g wrote:capo ultra wrote:

Re: How do people like commercial music?
They are manipulated to like it to some extent, commercial music isn't so much about the music as the accompanying marketing to make people buy it.
Take Simon Cowell, he never actually puts decent music out but instead makes stuff that's just so fucking cheesey and poppy it lulls people in to a false sense of coolness. He's been at it for years, like B-Witched with C'est La Vie... how much of the song do people actually know beyond that line, or maybe the violin ditty?
The record companies spend far more on marketing than actual production, same as with most commercial food manufacturers. To compare that with Led Zeppelin who extremely rarely did interviews or any promotional crap to become the second best selling band after the Beatles or Slayer who went platinum with an album doing no supporting tour or singles it puts how really un-talented a lot of commercial 'stars' are.
Fair enough Tiny T. has some skills at production and knows how to combine elements in a way that makes him commercially viable but when you actually pay attention to it it's junk hence his die-hard fan base being little girls that don't know better....

Also, you surely must be able to name some fairly mainstream films you enjoy? Fargo? Pulp Fiction? No Country For Old Men?

making a stab at a kid? lolSheff wrote:I know it sounds stubborn but does anyone else ever wonder about this? I'm not talking about commercial dubstep just commercial music in general, like all the top 40 shit. Fair enough there is some music in the charts which i occasionally like but after hearing it on the radio 15 times an hour then on every music channel at home 30 times an hour it really loses its spark.
Do you think that if people heard other genres than pop music they would like it? Or do you think its just the case that music isn't that much of a big deal in there life and they're happy with whatever the latest music is?
It fucking boggles me how people can listen to stuff like JLS and that beiber bird and actually claim they like it.
Firstly, you need to realize Pop music isn't really a genre. Look at the top 40 now (US) and you can see Hip-hop, House, Country, R&B, Punk, Electro, Alternative, Broadway, and now even a hint of dubstep. So, your "you hear one you hear em all" is blatantly misguided and telling of why you really made this thread, which ISN'T to earnestly to talk about pop.
Second, the nature of "pop" is that it's everywhere. It's easily accessible. It's all over billboards, television, radio, etc. So for people who can enjoy music, but aren't passionate about it enough to wander curiously into the underground, they can be spoon-fed these very accessible acts for their enjoyment. Ontop of that, there are jock douchebags and trend riders everywhere, it only makes sense they flock to pop. What some people around here don't seem to get that annoys the shit out of me is that you can't judge MUSIC by judging PEOPLE.
example: i'm gonna assume you don't go out of your way to read much. But you probably had those required readings in school and maybe you enjoyed one or two of them. IF you mustered a little curiosity for reading, depending on the "genre" your into, you would almost immediately be recommended classic and/or popular works within it. Ask any reader, and you'll mostly get the same recs on politics, history, thrillers, sci-fi, horror, etc. You aren't a serious reader, but you now have some kind of basis if you decide to dig deeper.
I'm sure i'm not alone when I say the only reason i'm as passionate about music as I am now is cause when I was little I CONSTANTLY listened to great pop acts of different ages, because they were that fucking awesome. It was only from listening so much that I dug into the shit no one has heard about.
That said, I still fuckin LOVE pop music. I could go on for a hot minute about pop acts I love. They have always played their crucial role in bringing about creative new sounds.
shit well that's a rant...
TL;DR: feck off

Re: How do people like commercial music?
Tastes do vary, obviously chart has the most followers who like it because that's what they're supposed to like. Everything gets like that, dubstep is big enough now to have that, and it's shit.
