Ive got 300 quid to play with....

Post by legend4ry » Tue Feb 22, 2011 10:47 pm

I want to know my options considering the following and want to splash it on 2 things max, I know its not a lot of money but give me some suggestions to play around with :).

Main Splash Out
Midi keyboard (bigger the better, no fancy buttons)
Midi Interface (MPD or something which can act as a midi mixing desk)
Headphones (either studio or just nice listening).
Audio Interface (Pro24 alternatives?)

Not really needed but open to suggestions
PC Monitor.
Nice tower for cooling/nice room.

Kinda cheap but good quality
Vinyl Crates/box.
Record Bag. ( I have a technic "city" bag atm but the graphic has peeled off :(.)

EDIT: I only can deal with cash, so I can't take advantage of any deals online.

Awww mate, I was looking for one of those a little while back! There was a bird in watford selling one and I couldn't afford it. It's ridonkulous that something that massive with that many controllers can be usb powered as well.
Why would they discontinue it, it's such a badass controller!

Anyways, basically all of the really nice big hammer action midi keyboards under £200-300 have been discontinued, (the M-audio above and the Yamaha P-60) but it depends if thats what you want.

Maybe some headphones? I got some Denon AH-D2000's recently and they are the mutts nutts for pretty much every application (as long as that application is inside my studio, no way am I walking around with a pair of £200 cans around my neck). But seriously they sound sweet!

You can pick up pretty big LCD screens fairly cheaply second hand these days on ebay and stuff, I got one (off of my mate so it would be a bit cheaper than ebay) for £40 for an older 22" lcd which works nicely.

What midi keyboard have you got at the moment? I can HIGHLY recommend Novation stuff. I had an M-Audio keyboard and a korg nanokey break on me in the same year. Got myself a Novation Nocturn and the thing feels so much higher quality, lovely feel to it and the light up buttons is teh sex :p

My MPD26 is absolutely rockin, I cant produce without it now.

Once you get the general idea and flow for the thing, you can jam out some really interesting patterns. And I know your drum style, and they are pretty good already, just think it will help it 'humanise' the whole process.
Handy it also has MMC control, so it has start, stop, fast forward, rewind and record buttons on the thing for when you want to jam and not touch a mouse or keyboard.

That and its got the original infamous MPC swings built into its hardware when you choose the beat repeat function. I actually use it more and more these days actually playing melodies on it, using the drum pads instead of my midi keyboard.

Same here, for a while, but with a padkontrol. Honestly tonality/melodies make more sense in a 4x4 grid... -q-

Also yeah, I am pondering an MPD, might go up Denmark street today and haggle - I get the sickest deals haha gift of the gab! But still, fruity has MPC swings built into it so not to bothered about those, I adore my SP-808 but alas, its a bit dated now as its zip drive/disc :(.

I'm not desperate for anything apart from a midi keyboard really but ive gone 2 years without a fully working one I guess I can go longer. so everything else is just wondering what to spend my moolah on!

To answer 3zas question.

I have a half-broken (only 1 octave works) MidAir25.
Emu0202.
Couple of headphones which ive just built up out of random parts, they do the job for non-mixing.
21" LCD.
Milk crates for vinyl.
Battered record bag.

So as you can see, my set ups quite ghetto these days, thats why I do most of my work on the MC303 and SP808.

Hows the pads on this?
I have heard they are as bad as on the MPKs.
Thinking about buying one for drum programming too...

Buying an mpd was my best investment ever. I originally bought it for production, now I'm using
it to control fx in Traktor. You can intergrate it in every setup.

What's wrong with your current audio interface ?

Record bag, the best place for that is your market, because if you buy it from ebay you have gonna have to pay a few quid extra for P&P.

The Akai MPD26 is petty good, althougth they start at like 140/150 ish...

and maybe this badboy:

Give it all to Henry @ Dub Studio, he'll do you a good deal on dubplates if you drop £300 at once!
IMO If you're not 100% sure what you should spend it on, you can't need anything that badly.

Or another monitor? Dual screen is badman.
