Helvetica use doesn't have to necessitate a poor designer.

In the internet age it's become very generic and overused. Luckily I do very little print media, but if one of my artists turned in a piece using something like impact, helvetica, comic sans, etc I'd send it back to be redone.

yeah but it stretches/compresses very easily so bush league designers use it a lot instead of learning how to properly use kerning and tracking. I put all of that in the same list of no-nos. Generic fonts, overuse of stroke, not aligning fonts all things that drive me crazy in the flyer/website/tshirt world of the internet

Not the font itself but the reason it's used. tens of thousands of fonts in the world but helvetica is on every third flyer. It's become a bad stereotype like skulls, stencil effects, and wings with feathers falling off or stripped completely.

i'm with you on that... i don't think something should be instantly dismissed just because it uses helvetica though...

That was my point, it's used so often because it's so good. Overused obviously and lazy, but it still has merit.

by that logic comic sans is a great font

they're just clean fonts but they're uneventful. They're like wearing blue jeans and a tshirt to a fashion show.

There's a certain art to fontography that is ignored a lot these days because people simply throw a colored box, throw it at 20% opacity and type in said box so they don't have to find a font that actually works with a graphic.

our teachers wouldnt let us use helvetica based off that notion. They made us attempt to be creative

I know where you're coming from, wouldn't expect a tutor to condone it.

I've never heard anyone refer to it as 'fontography', what happened to typography?

kind of slang our instructors used referring to when we designed our shit in fontographer. Instructor tried to make a distinguishment between those who use fonts and those who design their own or edit them for the sake of the piece at hand. Class was typography instructor joked "but we're doing fontography"

Sorry I'm being entirely nerdy over the subject. *hides in corner*

Thank you. Helvetica is a classic, it's part of the canon. Impact and comic sans are close to instantly dismissible, unless I suppose, if they are used ironically?

pleeease tell that to the studio songwriters here at Universal when they keep making me do mixdowns of songs with the same four chords :cornlol:

would love the "overused" argument here in the land of pop songs... they'd laugh you out of the office.

also, if an artist handed me something in comic sans, i'd give them three seconds to tell me they were just kidding before i slapped them in the jaw
