JUMPY/ BOUNCY DUBSTEP

Safe guys,
I have been doing some listening and i seem to have gotten very addicted to the bouncy/ jumpy style of dubstep...like badklaat and a lot of the hench crew mans....i have never done anything like i have done filthy/heavy tunes and maybe chilled out more but i have not the slightest idea how to construct and make a simple one of those jumpy basses..I was wondering if u guys would be able to give me a few pointers and techniques and leed me in the right direction ...

i just posted a topic about this yesterday and got a lot of negative feedback

from what im able to explain:

youre working with half time drums, however, adding varied hat/ride patterns with some light snare just before a down beat will give it a bouncy feel. i.e,. use triplets, they work the best in my opinion

as the drums are half time, make the basses/synths in double time.

honestly, its the simplest shit. try and write a dance song in any way than just turn the instruments into filthy basses/synths.

you mean like benga or old rusko stuff? its all about the drums and the groove in them, use lots of hats shakers etc to get a nice riddim.

using triplets and putting the kick on the 1 and 3 are both used by jakes alot and also in that tune you posted. both of those things help

If only I had my ibanez guitar to show you... just type it into youtube for a demonstration. It's 3 notes/hits played in the same amount of time as an 1/8th or 1/4 note.

hi!

this is the style I have been pushing for a few years now, so here are some of the things I do to give the tune some bounce:

1. as mentioned before, techno-ish kicks on the 1, 2, 3 and 4 (but switch it up every few bars)

2. start your bass on the upbeat (the space between the 1 and 2)

3. 909 hats also on the upbeat

4. major chords / key signature

Side chain compression is great for the bouncy feel. Put a crash or ride on the 1 2 3 4, but use side chain compression so they appear in the & portion of the beat.

That's the only thing I dislike about this forum. People just can't get over the fact that dubstep is evolving, now I'm not going to say for the better or worse because only time will tell. but people really need to get over it and enjoy it for what it isart and appreciate what the producers have done. The fact that you like brostep or the old school dubstep it's all the same thing just different styles.

On the other hand I personally think the reason brostep or filth or whatever has a bad rep, is the same reason everything that blows up has a bad rep.... the fans.
For example I was on one of skrillex's youtube videos and seen people arguing that it was dubstep because he had a wobble bass, when it was clearly an electro or even house song. If people would take the time to educate themselves instead of copy and pasting "this track is dirtier than ___" (guess you could blame us Americans mostly for this) I think we producers would live much more peaceful and alpaca filled lives.

Brostep is the dubstep in America. It's just what people want to hear. Heavier, angrier, louder bass.

For the most part this is true, even darker stuff isn't very well received even if it's heavy, as a producer from the US it's really a bummer.



As for this specific sound, someone already mentioned triplets, but you can create mad workable grooves with them. That and wonkey bass sounds with a lot of pitch modulation and reverb.



This is a really popular sound in dubstep, and probably where the kick snare Idea got so widely accepted, sorry to thread jack but I just got to thinking that, anyone have any thoughts?
