How does Gemini have such a powerful impact on the drop?

Post by matb123 » Wed Mar 02, 2011 8:08 pm

Can someone please identify what it is that makes Gemini's tracks so powerful when the bass kicks in, for instance in this track...

Is it something Gemini is doing stereo wise? because it seems really powerful and in your face so maybe could have something to do with the stereo placement?

Thanks :)

Not sure if you're trolling or not, but I'll assume you aren't.

Sounds quite basic IMO. The build has a no bass, silence 2 beats before the drop, other than a couple reversed reverb tails and the vocal hook. There's a pad rising in pitch too. When it drops theres the obvious bass/drums/midrange hitting, but if you listen closely theres a white noise (or a cymbal with a bitcrusher on it) one shot when it drops. I'm willing to bet he has some reverb tails for atmosphere going as well.

i haven't listened to his tunes too often but he's got really Trance-y sounds so maybe he's just able to give the illusion that the energy in his tracks is always rising, just like Trance tunes often do.

yea gemini doesn't do anything special, I really like his style though. Basically ya though adding a crash at the drop is always a good idea, I do it a lot, keeping the sub and maybe more powerful drum hits out of your intro awlays helps to make a drop sound HUUGE.

I've never heard a single one of his tunes, I missed his whole "rise to fame" as I've been without any audio for the past few weeks :|

What I can say is:
2, 4 or even 1 bar before the drop hits, make it quiet and then at the drop, the volume "booms" if you get me?

You can do this by using highpass filtration to take elements out in the build up, leaving nothing but a rise etc (basically anything with no bass), then when the drop hits, it will hit very hard!
Not too different to how Nero produce really

Yeah im kind of grasping what it is your all saying. Its kind of like taking out the main punch of your tune in the intro so that when it drops the brain thinks that there has been loads of power or volume added when really there hasn't been, right?

Essentially. The only extra thing he's doing right at the drop compared to the rest of the song is a crash cymbal or a white noise stab with some delay on it. It's barely there but if you listen close you'll hear it.

not to be a dick but i think its called a proper mixdown. you can cram 25 instruments/sounds on one beat and have it sound half as big as that hit and/or you can have a few at the same time but with proper mixing have it loud, wide and full.

i need suggestions for this.

Yeah pretty much, but watch the master volume, you want it to go down before the drop, then jump up at the drop

He also uses some high end arp sounds that drop at the same time as the bass and mid range synth - so basically he has a very 'full' sound using a lot of the frequency range that hits immediately after a pause. Sounds like he's done some work on widening the mid range as well.

are you having a laugh? it sounds bloody terrible. No power, no energy NO GROOVE.

Sounds like a bunch of preset VSTs and vengeance drums on a grid with a horrendously cheesy vocal on the top.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

agreed I only like blue off of his EP, because at least that one has some soul but the other songs suck, however his mix-down is pretty fucking good, and that is what has gotten him further than others. you can have all the custom sounds you want and sound like shit with a bad mix-down.

Hey guys,
I've been drilling away on this track for a while now and I just can't seem to nail down what I'm trying for. I want my drop to hit really really hard and intense, but it just keeps falling short. I feel like my build-up is ok but the drop itself is a bit limp-wristed.

I'm looking for any kind of little tips/tricks you guys are using to make that moment when the drop hits smack you in the face and grab your attention, cuz right now it seems like I'm missing something.

Thanks!

Take off the low frequencies before the drop, turn the volume down before the drop, make the first kick louder, play with the first crash volume and length (don't forget reverb).

Actually, the first tip is the most important. Also, the last bar before the drop is everything, you should put a lot of work in it.

white noise, cymbals and reverbed kicks on the drop will fill the frequency range more and make it sound alot more 'intense' lol.

Also you could try copying your bassline from the drop and putting it before and then high passing and automating the frequency on that, if you have a drum build before the drop make sure its not overly intense if the drop doesn't match that it will throw people off the tune.

automate your master fader so everything that's not a "drop" section is at -1.0~-2.0 dbs.

I agree with the white noise and cymbals suggestion, crash cymbal to be exact, and i like to tune the noise with the crash and run them both through just a touch of reverb.

Record yourself screaming and banging pots and pans together and layer it over the drop.
