Re: Seinfeld
Seinfeld's definitely one of those shows that you need to 'get'. Once you 'get' it, it's one of the funniest shows to ever come out of the US. I have several friends who didn't like it even after watching a good few episodes, then they suddenly had a moment where they got it and then POW, suddenly they love it.
Re: Seinfeld
OK, let me ask you this then. Do you all find the stand-up bits at the beginning and end of each episode funny? I mean, maybe i'm not getting the subtle nuances of the show and that's why it isn't funny to me. Me 'not getting it' aside, Jerry's stand-up routines are just him allegedly being funny by making observations about every day things. This is the worst part of the show. I sit there po faced each and every. At least the main show will have me smiling from time-to-time (usually at something Kramer has done).

Re: Seinfeld
nah not really but I dont get pissed off by them, they are just "there" - they often provide a background to the source of comedy for the episode.

Re: Seinfeld
I don't like anyone's stand up tbh.

Just because you are a character, does not mean you have character.
Re: Seinfeld
OK, just checking we didn't have MASSIVLY different senses of humor...

Re: Seinfeld
Yeah and lots of episodes make fun of the fact Seinfeld is a pretty shit stand up comic who just makes obvious observations. He's got some funny stuff, but he's definitely nowhere near a top standup comedian list IMO.
Even on his show he's probably the least funny character which is pretty damn funny in itself.

Re: Seinfeld
just watched every single episode (yup, every one) recently. that shit is like nostalgic crack to me. it does seem be a love it or hate it thing I guess.
honestly though, there are just so many moments of comedy perfection it seems you would have to lack a soul to not crack a smile.

hey, you wouldn't hire a clown to fix a leak in the john..so why do you let these hooligans tear down the biz?
Re: Seinfeld
are you trying to imply seinfeld is crap? poor man!cityzen wrote:So, can someone please tell me how Larry David can create something so funny as Curb and yet what he became famous for is soooo crap? Seinfeld has never made me laugh. It is the worst 'best' comedy show I have ever seen. WTF? I have given it chance after chance as it is so highly regarded but after a total of about 12 episodes it still does nothing for me.
Maybe you lot can recommend your favourite episodes to me to try and sway my opinion.
tbh curb just seems like episodes of seinfeld that never got made.... same level of comedy imo
The Wait Out (personal fav)
The Wig Master
The Contest (the masturbation episode)

he has his moments but for the most part he became just a setup for the other 3.
imo the best comedic sitcom ever hands down

So inspired, so devious, yet so simple.
strictly vinyl. strictly rotary. strictly old men with beards.

jerry wasn't an actor. the other 3 were. the very best thing about the show is that jerry is pretty much the straight man. i can remember a couple of times george and elaine giving jerry shit as well:
JERRY: Hey, should we say something to him?
GEORGE: Oh, yeah I'm sure he loves to hear from fans in the locker room.
JERRY: well he could say hello to me. I wouldn't mind.
GEORGE: He's Keith Hernandez. You're Jerry Seinfeld.
JERRY: So?
GEORGE: What are you comparing yourself to Keith Hernandez. The guys a baseball player Jerry, Baseball!
JERRY: I know what he is. I recognized him. You didn't even notice him.
GEORGE: What, ... you are making some wisecracks in a night club... wo wo wo. The guy was in game SIX two runs down two outs facing elimination.
re: his comedic style. have to remember when seinfeld was made. 'observational comedy' wasn't nearly as big at the time as it is today. i think he does what he does pretty damn well. a lot better than Michael McIntyre's shite "so I was in a shop buying a newspaper, and..."
all that said, there's an absolutely blatant dip in quality after larry david left. pretty obvious he played such a huge role in the show. looking at CYE, it's obvious that he was responsible for the bulk of the seinfeld show's greatness

Re: Seinfeld
Craig knows, there are many scenes where George or Elaine rip Jerry about his terrible standup, the show doesn't take itself seriously and neither should the viewer or they're doing it wrong. I think Larry Charles and Larry David were aware of the blandness of Jerry's shite humour but it helps make his character more of a 'straight guy' even though he's a professional comedian, it gives the other characters something to work off and creates an amazing balance in most scenes. George Costanza is the greatest comedy character of all time. I don't think I'll ever get tired of Seinfeld!lloydnoise wrote:Best sitcom ever to come out of America imo

without a doubt, love his increasingly desperate attempts to get Susan to call off the wedding in Season 7:stormtrace wrote:George Costanza is the greatest comedy character of all time. I don't think I'll ever get tired of Seinfeld!lloydnoise wrote:Best sitcom ever to come out of America imo
also lol @ this
Re: Seinfeld
Jerry has some excellent interaction with the smaller characters like Kenny Bania and Newman as well. Like its been mentioned, Jerry is the perfect person to sit in between all these other crazy characters and he works well being the "daddy" of the group.lloydnoise wrote:Craig knows, there are many scenes where George or Elaine rip Jerry about his terrible standup, the show doesn't take itself seriously and neither should the viewer or they're doing it wrong. I fucking love it, good mixture of social awkwardness and slapstick.

Re: Seinfeld
the crazy set-ups
(Kramer getting carsalesman to drive until car runs out of fuel),
clever plot feedback loops,
the mundane obsessions & mean motivations
and the Fawlty Towers-like cringeworthy character flaws
all make for an original laugh
but my brothers don't get it....they get annoyed by all the whining.
